There are three major types of contaminated water. It is important to note that regardless of the color of water, contaminants may be present. The Three Main Water Categories:

Category 1:

This water has a significant level of contamination that could cause discomfort or illness if ingested. In 1978, the federal government banned consumer uses of lead-containing paint, but some states banned it even earlier. Lead from paint, including lead-contaminated dust, is one of the most common causes of lead poisoning.

Lead paint is still present in millions of homes, sometimes under layers of newer paint. If the paint is in good shape, the lead paint is usually not a problem. Deteriorating lead-based paint (peeling, chipping, chalking, cracking, damaged, or damp) is a hazard and needs immediate attention.

It may also be a hazard when found on surfaces that children can chew or that get a lot of wear-and-tear, such as:

o    Windows and window sills

Heavy exposures tend to occur in the construction industry and in ship repair, particularly during the removal of asbestos materials due to renovation, repairs, or demolition. Workers are also likely to be exposed during the manufacture of asbestos products (such as textiles, friction products, insulation, and other building materials) and during automotive brake and clutch repair work.”

Bleach Does Not Kill Mold or Mildew?

“Chlorine bleach does not kill mold. Chlorine bleach does not kill mold spores that grow into mold. The notion that bleach kills mold is a myth. Bleach will only change the color of mold and temporarily slow the growth of mold. Eventually the mold will re appear and thrive digesting anything organic or cellulose in its path. The EPA Environmental Protection Agency and the manufacture of Clorox Bleach have both issued statement acknowledges that bleach does not kill mold.

One of the problems with chlorine bleach killing mold is that chlorine bleach is practically 100% water that helps to feed mold. Researchers have stated that the active ingredient in bleach begins to die off almost immediately after the manufacturing process has been completed. Furthermore, researchers have stated that chlorine bleach looses almost 50% of its strength within the first few month of storage and continues to degrade thereafter. “

Chemicals are used around the house and at work every day.  It is very important to read container labels, and the material safety data sheets, also known as MSDSs before you open and use the chemical.  Eye protection, storage containers, mixing of chemicals are all addressed in the MSDSs so please read before your proceed!  Make sure you dispose of unused chemicals in the proper manor when you are done.  Refer back to the MSDSs for disposal requirements.  If you cannot locate the MSDSs, you should be able to research the internet to look up the products website for the same information.  SERVPRO of Beachwood uses Benefect as a chemical.  MSDS can be located at http://www.benefect.com/docs/msds_50475-disinfectant_can-eng.pdf

·        If you smell an odor from your gas refrigerator's cooling unit have an expert service it. An odor from the cooling unit of your gas refrigerator can mean you have a defect in the cooling unit. It could also be giving off CO.

·        When purchasing gas equipment, buy only equipment carrying the seal of a national testing agency, such as the American Gas Association or Underwriters' Laboratories.

·        Install a battery-operated CO detector in your home and check or replace the battery when you change the time on your clocks each spring and fall."

Mold has received a lot of media attention over the past few years.  Mold is indoors and outdoors.  There is a lot of information on the internet regarding mold, so please make sure the information you read is accurate.

·         “There is no practical way to eliminate all mold and mold spores in the indoor environment; the way to control indoor mold growth is to control moisture.

·         If mold is a problem in your home or school, you must clean up the mold and eliminate sources of moisture.

·         Fix the source of the water problem or leak to prevent mold growth.

·         Reduce indoor humidity (to 30-60%) to decrease mold growth by:

1. Venting bathrooms, dryers and other moisture-generating sources to the outside
2. Using air conditioners and de-humidifiers
3. Increasing ventilation
4. Using exhaust fans whenever cooking, dishwashing and cleaning”

“If your home was built before 1978, there is a good chance it has lead-based paint. In 1978, the federal government banned consumer uses of lead-containing paint, but some states banned it even earlier. Lead from paint, including lead-contaminated dust, is one of the most common causes of lead poisoning.

·         Lead paint is still present in millions of homes, sometimes under layers of newer paint. If the paint is in good shape, the lead paint is usually not a problem. Deteriorating lead-based paint (peeling, chipping, chalking, cracking, damaged, or damp) is a hazard and needs immediate attention.

·         It may also be a hazard when found on surfaces that children can chew or that get a lot of wear-and-tear, such as:

o    Windows and window sills

o    Doors and door frames

o    Stairs, railings, banisters, and porches

·         Be sure to keep all paint in excellent shape and clean up dust frequently.  Lead in household dust results from indoor sources such as deteriorating lead-based paint.

Only a special vacuum cleaner that is designed for asbestos containment (class H) can be safely used when cleaning up during and after asbestos removal. Ordinary vacuum cleaners cannot be used, even those fitted with a HEPA filter. An ordinary vacuum cleaner will expel the asbestos fibres into the room air.”

Protect From Sewer Backup

“Have you ever experienced a large amount of standing water in your basement after a heavy rainstorm?  Do you wonder where it comes from and how so much ends up in your home? If the water has come up through any plumbing fixtures or you have standing water over your floor drain, there’s a good chance that you are experiencing municipal sewer backup.

It is not uncommon during heavy rainstorms for municipal sanitary sewers to become overloaded with more volume than they can handle. And the result, since almost all municipal sewer systems are gravity fed, is the excess water being forced back through your sewer line towards your home and into your basement and other low lying drains in that area. Large quantities of sewage-contaminated water can be pushed through floor drains, toilets or showers and can create a potentially dangerous and unhealthy environment in your home.

If your sewers backup into your basement, the most important thing to remember is DO NOT WALK IN or TOUCH the standing water! The power must be turned off first to help avoid risk of electrocution.

You do not have to live with the fear of your sewers backing up into your home. You can help protect your home and your family from the unhealthy environment create from municipal sewer backup.  A sewer backup prevention system can help.

Generally, these types of systems are beyond the skill level of your standard do-it-yourselfer and will require professional help. Sewer backup prevention can likely be accomplished with the help of professional basement waterproofing contractors and/or licensed plumbers experienced in these situations.

A professional contractor should install a double- or triple-valve system that provides protection and comes with a significant warranty. Most systems can be installed in your front yard and are almost undetectable. The check valves are placed into the sewer line so when the sewer is overloaded and pushes water toward your home, they will automatically close and keep the sewage contaminated water out of your basement. The pump and basin, as shown above, will provide the advantage of being able to use your household plumbing during times of sewer backup."

“Industrial hygiene is generally defined as the art and science dedicated to the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, communication and control of environmental stressors in, or arising from, the work place that may result in injury, illness, impairment, or affect the well being of workers and members of the community. These stressors are divided into the categories biological, chemical, physical, ergonomic and psychosocial.

The profession of industrial hygiene uses strict and rigorous scientific methodology and often requires professional experience in determining the potential for hazard and evaluating exposures or risk in workplace and environmental studies.

The Industrial Hygienist may be involved with the assessment and control of physical, chemical, biological or environmental hazards in the workplace or community that could cause injury or disease. Physical hazards may include noise, temperature extremes, illumination extremes, ionizing or non-ionizing radiation, and ergonomics. At the NIH, chemical exposures that are evaluated include formaldehyde, xylene, ethylene oxide, and waste anesthetic gases. Other related areas including Indoor air quality (IAQ) and safety may also receive the attention of the Industrial Hygienist. Biological hazards may stem from the potential for exposure to legionella or bloodborne pathogens.

Industrial Hygienists work to minimize exposures through the implementation of controls. The preferred method of control is the elimination of the chemical, which can sometimes be achieved by the substitution of a less hazardous material. Another method to reduce exposure is the use of an engineering control, such as a laboratory hood or other enclosure that isolates the chemical from the worker. In some cases an administrative control, such as the rotation of workers through a position to minimize the exposure to any single worker, is implemented. The use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, goggles, or respirators may be recommended. The use of PPE is the least preferred method due to the diligence required to ensure effectiveness.”
