Biohazard Cleanup from Sewage Disaster in Newburgh Heights
5/17/2018 (Permalink)
Water from sewer system backups should be handled with great caution and can be very dangerous if proper cleaning protocol is not used. The water can be unsanitary and may contain bacteria and viruses that could cause serious illness. SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast has the crew with special training and equipment necessary to safely clean this type of contamination.
Sewage Backup or Toilet Overflow? Call Us Today at 216-464-4498
There are three major types of contaminated water. It is important to note that regardless of the color of water, contaminants may be present. SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast will inspect that contaminated water to determine the type of water and then plan the appropriate response to safely restore your Euclid home or Shaker Heights business.
The Three Main Water Categories:
Category 1:
This is water from a clean source, such as a broken clean water supply line or faucet. If left untreated, Category 1 water lead to mold and can quickly degrade into Category 2 or 3 water depending upon factors as time, temperature, and contact with contaminants.
Category 2:
This water has a significant level of contamination that could cause discomfort or illness if ingested. Sources for Category 2 water may include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine but no feces; or dishwasher overflow. Category 2 water may contain bacteria and viruses and can lead to mold if untreated. Category 2 water can quickly degrade into Category 3 water if left untreated.
Category 3:
This water is grossly unsanitary and could cause severe illness or death if ingested, and any contact should be avoided. Category 3 water can contain pathogenic, toxigenic, or other harmful agents. Examples of Category 3 water includes but doesn't limit: sewage, toilet backflows that originate beyond toilet trap, all forms of flooding from seawater, ground surface water from rivers or streams, and other contaminated water from weather-related events that may contain silt, organic matter, pesticides, heavy metals, or toxic organic substances.
24 Emergency Service
Sewage backup should be considered an emergency and dealt with as quickly as possible. SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast are the water damage restoration specialists with specific training and expertise to bring your Cuyahoga Heights home or business back to its former glory. Armed with two teaspoon-sized sacs of the oily, yellow liquid, it can potentially unload both directly at their perceived enemy up to 15 feet away! Whether in the form of a light haze or full scale spurt, the musk is strong enough to cause short term blindness in addition to the natural shock and stench lingering afterwards. In addition, the victim may experience nose and eye inflammation, nausea, and difficulty breathing. "

Lead in your Brooklyn Heights Home?
8/27/2017 (Permalink)
What's wrong with lead? Isn't that in pencils? Well...yes, but it's extremely dangerous when mixed with other chemicals. The most common culprit is lead paint. Let's hear what our friends from the Environmental Protection Agency have to say about lead paint:
“If your home was built before 1978, there is a good chance it has lead-based paint. In 1978, the federal government banned consumer uses of lead-containing paint, but some states banned it even earlier. Lead from paint, including lead-contaminated dust, is one of the most common causes of lead poisoning.
Lead paint is still present in millions of homes, sometimes under layers of newer paint. If the paint is in good shape, the lead paint is usually not a problem. Deteriorating lead-based paint (peeling, chipping, chalking, cracking, damaged, or damp) is a hazard and needs immediate attention.
It may also be a hazard when found on surfaces that children can chew or that get a lot of wear-and-tear, such as:
o Windows and window sills
o Doors and door frames
o Stairs, railings, banisters, and porches
Be sure to keep all paint in excellent shape and clean up dust frequently. Lead in household dust results from indoor sources such as deteriorating lead-based paint.
Lead dust can also be tracked into the home from soil outside that is contaminated by deteriorated exterior lead-based paint and other lead sources, such as industrial pollution and past use of leaded gasoline.
Renovation, repair or painting activities can create toxic lead dust when painted surfaces are disturbed or demolished.
Pipes and solder — Lead is used in some water service lines and household plumbing materials. Lead can leach, or enter the water, as water flows through the plumbing. Lead pipes and lead solder were commonly used until 1986. “
If you or someone you know is in need of professional lead paint disposal, call SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast today at 216.464.4498! Our services extend throughout the upper region of Ohio including, but not limited to: South Euclid, Lyndhurst, and Pepper Pike!
Ways to use bleach

“Regain your drain and keep your sink in the pink with these cleaning solutions.
Steps to a cleaner sink and drain:
Before you go to bed, clear out the dishes from the sink and place them in the dishwasher. You can hit the sheets knowing the dishes will be clean in the morning.
Clean and disinfect kitchen sinks in one easy step with Clorox® Disinfecting Wipes. You can also clean and disinfect sinks daily with Clorox® Clean-Up® Cleaner + Bleach.
To deodorize drains, flush with water. Pour 3/4 cup Clorox® Regular-Bleach into the drain, then flush with hot water.
Keep your drain running clear by switching to liquid soap or glycerin bar soap. The binders in traditional bar soaps are the main cause of soap scum and contribute to clogged drains. Source: RealSimple.com*”

Gaining A Better Understanding Of Asbestos
7/5/2017 (Permalink)
It is important to full understand what asbestos is, as many of us have it in our homes and could be unaware. “Asbestos is the name given to a group of naturally occurring minerals that are resistant to heat and corrosion. Asbestos has been used in products, such as insulation for pipes (steam lines for example), floor tiles, building materials, and in vehicle brakes and clutches. Asbestos includes the mineral fibers chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, tremolite, anthophyllite, actinolite and any of these materials that have been chemically treated or altered. Heavy exposures tend to occur in the construction industry and in ship repair, particularly during the removal of asbestos materials due to renovation, repairs, or demolition. Workers are also likely to be exposed during the manufacture of asbestos products (such as textiles, friction products, insulation, and other building materials) and during automotive brake and clutch repair work.”

Bleach Does Not Kill Mold or Mildew?
5/5/2017 (Permalink)
“Chlorine bleach does not kill mold. Chlorine bleach does not kill mold spores that grow into mold. The notion that bleach kills mold is a myth. Bleach will only change the color of mold and temporarily slow the growth of mold. Eventually the mold will re appear and thrive digesting anything organic or cellulose in its path. The EPA Environmental Protection Agency and the manufacture of Clorox Bleach have both issued statement acknowledges that bleach does not kill mold.
One of the problems with chlorine bleach killing mold is that chlorine bleach is practically 100% water that helps to feed mold. Researchers have stated that the active ingredient in bleach begins to die off almost immediately after the manufacturing process has been completed. Furthermore, researchers have stated that chlorine bleach looses almost 50% of its strength within the first few month of storage and continues to degrade thereafter. “

Facts About Hoarding
4/5/2017 (Permalink)
Not everyone realizes that there can be biohazard risks to hoarding due to some of the contents. There could be mold growing that is undetected, as well as animal feces that could have gone unnoticed due to an overcrowded living space. Here are some more facts about hoarding that should be known.
“True hoarding behavior is actually fairly common, with anywhere from 2 to 5 percent of the general American population meeting diagnosis requirements [source: WebMD]. Before you self-diagnose, we're not just talking about someone with a few hundred CDs lying around. Instead, clinical hoarding behavior is characterized by the person's inability to function or move about in his own home.”

What Is Asbestos?
The following was copied directly from an online article written and located at http://www.chiff.com/a/asbestos-disease.htm. We thought we would share the information as it was a well written definition.
“Asbestos is a mineral made up of tiny fibers. It can be positively identified only with a special type of microscope. There are several types of asbestos fibers, some are more harmful than others. In the past, asbestos was added to a variety of products to strengthen them and to provide heat insulation and fire resistance. Many homes were made using asbestos for insulation, flooring and in heating and electrical systems.
The danger of using asbestos has been recognized throughout history. Warning about the health effects of asbestos can be found in writings from Ancient Greece! The first documented case of an asbestos-related death was reported in 1906. However, it was not until the late 1970s that laws in America began to change to protect people from the health hazards of asbestos exposure. Asbestos was not totally banned in the UK until late in 1999 and Japan is still waiting to enact laws against all forms of asbestos.”

Why Sewage Is Dangerous?
3/3/2017 (Permalink)
“Sewage is wastewater that can be hazardous to the environment, which is why we don't want raw sewage to get into the groundwater or other bodies of water. Besides being very smelly, sewage that gets into the drinking water supply, or bodies of fresh water or sea water, can do a great deal of damage to just about every element in the ecosystem. Let's start with the water we drink. If what you flush down the toilet or pour down the drain gets into the water supply, harmful and potentially deadly bacteria infect the water and it becomes a health hazard. The bacteria in human waste, such as E. coli, can infect the water and cause disease. Other harmful solids and chemicals in sewage can damage bodies of water that support wildlife. Fertilizers, such as nitrogen and phosphates, encourage algae growth, which blocks sunlight and affects the quality of the water. Bacteria use up oxygen in the water as they decompose the organic material in the wastewater, and the resulting lack of oxygen in the water kills the fish. The solids in sewage cause the water to appear dark and murky, which also affects the ability of fish to breathe and see around them.”

Medical Waste

“Concern for the potential health hazards of medical wastes grew in the 1980s after medical wastes were washing up on several east coast beaches. This prompted Congress to enact The MWTA of 1988. The MWTA was a two-year federal program in which EPA was required to promulgate regulations on management of medical waste. The Agency did so on March 24, 1989. The regulations for this two year program went into effect on June 24, 1989 in four states - New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Rhode Island and Puerto Rico. Biohazard Cleanup
10/19/2016 (Permalink)
“Any tissue or bodily fluid is classified as a biohazard per Federal regulations. Whenever a violent crime occurs within a building, or when a body begins to decompose within its interior, the surrounding building materials become contaminated with a variety of toxic agents. The Reference Guide for Trauma and Crime Scene Biological and Infectious Hazard Clean Up provides a number of detailed items that cover the removal of these toxins from building materials. For example, blood stains on the carpet typically soak through the carpet and seep into the flooring beneath. Effective environmental cleaning not only removes the biohazard from the carpet, but also from its supporting understructure. ” Source copied from: http://www.iicrc.org/guide-for-crime-scene-biological-and-infectious-hazard-clean-a-69.html Please click link to continue reading the online article.

June is National Safety Month-Gasoline Safety
6/30/2016 (Permalink)
We found on the internet an interesting topic regarding gasoline safety at: http://toolboxtopics.com/Gen%20Industry/Flammable%20Liquids%20-%20Gasoline.htm
Here is just a small portion of the online article:
“Gasoline is the most common flammable liquid manufactured and used. Because virtually everyone uses gasoline it is often assumed that everyone is familiar with it's dangerous properties. However, as familiarity breeds contempt (or at least carelessness) it may be a good idea to review this highly hazardous material. Here are some brief but important items to remember when dealing with gasoline.”
“Gasoline as a liquid does not burn. It is the vapors that the liquid gives off that burns.Vapors usually can not be seen but frequently travel long distances to a source of ignition. Thus the gasoline can be located a great distance from an actual ignition source.”Please click the source link provided above to continue reading and learning!

Here a few tips on how to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning copied directly from: http://safetytoolboxtopics.com/General/carbon-monoxide-poisoning-kills-two.html
· " Have your heating system, water heater and any other gas, oil, or coal burning appliances serviced by a qualified technician every year.
· Do not use portable flameless chemical heaters (catalytic) indoors. Although these heaters don't have a flame, they burn gas and can cause CO to build up inside your home, cabin, or camper.
· If you smell an odor from your gas refrigerator's cooling unit have an expert service it. An odor from the cooling unit of your gas refrigerator can mean you have a defect in the cooling unit. It could also be giving off CO.
· When purchasing gas equipment, buy only equipment carrying the seal of a national testing agency, such as the American Gas Association or Underwriters' Laboratories.
· Install a battery-operated CO detector in your home and check or replace the battery when you change the time on your clocks each spring and fall."

Mold has received a lot of media attention over the past few years. Mold is indoors and outdoors. There is a lot of information on the internet regarding mold, so please make sure the information you read is accurate.
A great source of information can be found at the EPA website. We copied the following directly from https://www.epa.gov/mold/ten-things-you-should-know-about-mold “Ten Things You Should Know about Mold” to get you started in the right direction.
· “There is no practical way to eliminate all mold and mold spores in the indoor environment; the way to control indoor mold growth is to control moisture.
· If mold is a problem in your home or school, you must clean up the mold and eliminate sources of moisture.
· Fix the source of the water problem or leak to prevent mold growth.
· Reduce indoor humidity (to 30-60%) to decrease mold growth by:
- Venting bathrooms, dryers and other moisture-generating sources to the outside
- Using air conditioners and de-humidifiers
- Increasing ventilation
- Using exhaust fans whenever cooking, dishwashing and cleaning”

Lead Exposure Info
5/23/2016 (Permalink)
The following was copied directly from: https://www.epa.gov/lead/protect-your-family-exposures-lead#sl-home
“If your home was built before 1978, there is a good chance it has lead-based paint. In 1978, the federal government banned consumer uses of lead-containing paint, but some states banned it even earlier. Lead from paint, including lead-contaminated dust, is one of the most common causes of lead poisoning.
· Lead paint is still present in millions of homes, sometimes under layers of newer paint. If the paint is in good shape, the lead paint is usually not a problem. Deteriorating lead-based paint (peeling, chipping, chalking, cracking, damaged, or damp) is a hazard and needs immediate attention.
· It may also be a hazard when found on surfaces that children can chew or that get a lot of wear-and-tear, such as:
o Windows and window sills
o Doors and door frames
o Stairs, railings, banisters, and porches
· Be sure to keep all paint in excellent shape and clean up dust frequently. Lead in household dust results from indoor sources such as deteriorating lead-based paint.
· Lead dust can also be tracked into the home from soil outside that is contaminated by deteriorated exterior lead-based paint and other lead sources, such as industrial pollution and past use of leaded gasoline.
· Renovation, repair or painting activities can create toxic lead dust when painted surfaces are disturbed or demolished.
· Pipes and solder — Lead is used in some water service lines and household plumbing materials. Lead can leach, or enter the water, as water flows through the plumbing. Lead pipes and lead solder were commonly used until 1986. “

The following was copied directly from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asbestos_abatement
“Depending on how and where asbestos was applied, it might not pose any risk to most users of the building. If the fibers cannot become dislodged, they cannot be inhaled, and thus the asbestos poses no risk. However, some methods of applying asbestos, particularly flocking, allow asbestos fibers to gradually drop off into the air. Asbestos poses hazards to maintenance personnel who have to drill holes in walls for installation of cables or pipes. Even if the workers are protected, such maintenance operation may release fibers into the air, which may be inhaled by others. Interventions in areas where asbestos is present often have to follow stringent procedures.
When asbestos fibers can easily be made into airborne dust, the material is known as "friable". For example, a popcorn ceiling is extremely friable, whereas asbestos floor tile is considered non-friable.
Different countries have different regulations and methods of enforcement, when it comes to asbestos removal. It is extremely important to remember that prior to any asbestos removal procedures taking place; the client has a duty of care and must verify that the specialist removal contractor can provide proof of the following:
· license if licensing is required within the jurisdiction
· specific asbestos public and employer liability insurance
· worker training to include supervisor and contract manager training within the past 12 months
· worker fit-testing and medical surveillance within 12 months
· specialist equipment testing within 6 months - DOP and PAT within the EU
Optionally, the specialist contractor should be able to provide accreditation from ARCA or other such trade organization”
Asbestos Removal
5/9/2016 (Permalink)
The following was copied directly from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asbestos_abatement
“If removal is to be performed when users are still present in the building, it is usually necessary to relocate some users temporarily. Typically, the part of the building from which asbestos is being removed has to be sealed off in order to prevent contamination of the other areas. Methods of sealing off an area often include the use of polyethylene film, duct tape and negative air pressure machines which are fitted with HEPA filters. The idea is that the contained area is pulling fresh air in as to not let asbestos fibers out into the surrounding environment.
Only a special vacuum cleaner that is designed for asbestos containment (class H) can be safely used when cleaning up during and after asbestos removal. Ordinary vacuum cleaners cannot be used, even those fitted with a HEPA filter. An ordinary vacuum cleaner will expel the asbestos fibres into the room air.”

"Health Effects From Exposure to Asbestos"
5/8/2016 (Permalink)
The following was copied directly from: https://www.epa.gov/asbestos/learn-about-asbestos
"Exposure to asbestos increases your risk of developing lung disease. That risk is made worse by smoking. In general, the greater the exposure to asbestos, the greater the chance of developing harmful health effects.
Disease symptoms may take many years to develop following exposure.
Asbestos-related conditions can be difficult to identify. Healthcare providers usually identify the possibility of asbestos exposure and related health conditions like lung disease by taking a thorough medical history. This includes looking at the person’s medical, work, cultural and environmental history.
After a doctor suspects an asbestos-related health condition, he or she can use a number of tools to help make the actual diagnosis. Some of these tools are physical examination, chest x-ray and pulmonary function tests. Your doctor may also refer you to a specialist who treats diseases caused by asbestos.
Three of the major health effects associated with asbestos exposure are:
- lung cancer
- mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that is found in the thin lining of the lung, chest and the abdomen and heart
- asbestosis, a serious progressive, long-term, non-cancer disease of the lungs"

What is Asbestos? Where Can You Find Asbestos?
5/7/2016 (Permalink)
The following was copied directly from:
https://www.epa.gov/asbestos/learn-about-asbestos
"Asbestos is a mineral fiber that occurs in rock and soil.
Because of its fiber strength and heat resistance asbestos has been used in a variety of building construction materials for insulation and as a fire retardant. Asbestos has also been used in a wide range of manufactured goods, mostly in building materials (roofing shingles, ceiling and floor tiles, paper products, and asbestos cement products), friction products (automobile clutch, brake, and transmission parts), heat-resistant fabrics, packaging, gaskets, and coatings.
Where asbestos may be found:
· Attic and wall insulation produced containing vermiculite
· Vinyl floor tiles and the backing on vinyl sheet flooring and adhesives
· Roofing and siding shingles
· Textured paint and patching compounds used on wall and ceilings
· Walls and floors around wood-burning stoves protected with asbestos paper, millboard, or cement sheets
· Hot water and steam pipes coated with asbestos material or covered with an asbestos blanket or tape
· Oil and coal furnaces and door gaskets with asbestos insulation
· Heat-resistant fabrics
· Automobile clutches and brakes"

Protect From Sewer Backup
5/1/2016 (Permalink)
The following was copied directly from:https://blog.allstate.com/how-to-protect-your-basement-from-sewer-backup/
“Have you ever experienced a large amount of standing water in your basement after a heavy rainstorm? Do you wonder where it comes from and how so much ends up in your home? If the water has come up through any plumbing fixtures or you have standing water over your floor drain, there’s a good chance that you are experiencing municipal sewer backup.
It is not uncommon during heavy rainstorms for municipal sanitary sewers to become overloaded with more volume than they can handle. And the result, since almost all municipal sewer systems are gravity fed, is the excess water being forced back through your sewer line towards your home and into your basement and other low lying drains in that area. Large quantities of sewage-contaminated water can be pushed through floor drains, toilets or showers and can create a potentially dangerous and unhealthy environment in your home.
If your sewers backup into your basement, the most important thing to remember is DO NOT WALK IN or TOUCH the standing water! The power must be turned off first to help avoid risk of electrocution.
You do not have to live with the fear of your sewers backing up into your home. You can help protect your home and your family from the unhealthy environment create from municipal sewer backup. A sewer backup prevention system can help.
Generally, these types of systems are beyond the skill level of your standard do-it-yourselfer and will require professional help. Sewer backup prevention can likely be accomplished with the help of professional basement waterproofing contractors and/or licensed plumbers experienced in these situations.
A professional contractor should install a double- or triple-valve system that provides protection and comes with a significant warranty. Most systems can be installed in your front yard and are almost undetectable. The check valves are placed into the sewer line so when the sewer is overloaded and pushes water toward your home, they will automatically close and keep the sewage contaminated water out of your basement. The pump and basin, as shown above, will provide the advantage of being able to use your household plumbing during times of sewer backup."
"[Editor’s note: Sewer backups aren’t typically covered by a standard homeowners insurance policy; talk to your agent to see if additional coverage options make sense for you]”

What is an Industrial Hygienist?
4/29/2016 (Permalink)
The following was copied directly from: http://www.ors.od.nih.gov/sr/dohs/aboutDOHS/TAB/Pages/technical_branch_ih.aspx
“What is Industrial Hygiene?”
“Industrial hygiene is generally defined as the art and science dedicated to the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, communication and control of environmental stressors in, or arising from, the work place that may result in injury, illness, impairment, or affect the well being of workers and members of the community. These stressors are divided into the categories biological, chemical, physical, ergonomic and psychosocial.
The profession of industrial hygiene uses strict and rigorous scientific methodology and often requires professional experience in determining the potential for hazard and evaluating exposures or risk in workplace and environmental studies.
The Industrial Hygienist may be involved with the assessment and control of physical, chemical, biological or environmental hazards in the workplace or community that could cause injury or disease. Physical hazards may include noise, temperature extremes, illumination extremes, ionizing or non-ionizing radiation, and ergonomics. At the NIH, chemical exposures that are evaluated include formaldehyde, xylene, ethylene oxide, and waste anesthetic gases. Other related areas including Indoor air quality (IAQ) and safety may also receive the attention of the Industrial Hygienist. Biological hazards may stem from the potential for exposure to legionella or bloodborne pathogens.
Industrial Hygienists work to minimize exposures through the implementation of controls. The preferred method of control is the elimination of the chemical, which can sometimes be achieved by the substitution of a less hazardous material. Another method to reduce exposure is the use of an engineering control, such as a laboratory hood or other enclosure that isolates the chemical from the worker. In some cases an administrative control, such as the rotation of workers through a position to minimize the exposure to any single worker, is implemented. The use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, goggles, or respirators may be recommended. The use of PPE is the least preferred method due to the diligence required to ensure effectiveness.”
