"Total carpet restoration can have transformative effects on carpeting, making the home appear bright and new. It can be a highly involved process, though, and requires several skills, some of them rather advanced. In almost all cases, it will take a trained professional to get the job done right, and even among professionals, effective cleaning and repair is something that has to be learned. What processes are involved during carpet restoration?

To give the carpeting new life, technicians will have to clean it thoroughly. Over the years, it will take on a variety of soils and stains, and vacuuming isn’t enough to handle them. Certified technicians have additional, commercial grade technology that makes deeper cleaning possible. This includes equipment like hot water extraction technology, bonnet cleaners, and special cleansing agents that break down various soils for easy removal. 

During the IICRC certification process, technicians are challenged to learn the most effective cleaning methods available, giving them the tools they need to handle any job, of any size. During carpet restoration, these methods will render the best results, and include processes that remove dry soils, suspend matted soils, and eliminates them as well. Technicians are also trained in proper drying and grooming techniques, so the carpet will set well after cleaning.

While cleaning is essential for maintaining the carpet’s integrity, it is only one step. After years of neglect, stains, odors, and structural damage will likely be present. Removing stains requires specialized formulated  stain removing agents, and if the stain has caused permanent discoloration to the fibers, color repair will be needed. Professionals certified in odor removal are trained in the detection and elimination of any odor type, whether organic, chemical, or the product of combustion. If needed, odor removal technicians can employ chemical solutions that safely suppress and neutralize odors.

A repair technician may also be needed when the flooring separates from the baseboards and bunches up. During some repairs, the professional will cut away the damaged area and replace it with a donor patch from a closet corner or other inconspicuous location that is in good condition. With professional grooming, the new bonded insert will appear identical to the carpet around it.
