How Are Refrigerated Items Affected by Power Outages in My Shaker Heights Home?

5/4/2018 (Permalink)

Warmer weather is finally here in the University Heights area!

Spring & summer thunderstorms are approaching. and we thought you should know what to do with refrigerated items should there be a power outage. Here are some tips from American Red Cross on Food Safety:

1.) Call an electrical company to inquire about how long the outage may last
2.) Keep fridge and freezer doors closed as much as possible
3.) Food that is over 40°F for longer than 2 hours should be disposed of as well as food that is discolored or becomes odorous
4.) Eat perishable foods first: fridge first, then freezer
5.) Have a cooler and ice prepared if the outrage is more than 24 hours; keep it in a cool place covered in a blanket or towel
