Northeast Ohio Weather Today Is Hot!
7/6/2017 (Permalink)
The weather in Northeast Ohio today is HOT! What a perfect day to relax at the pool! While pools are a great way to keep cool this summer they can also pose some safety risks. Brushing up on some of these tips will keep your family safe this summer while beating the heat.
- “If you are putting in a new pool, hot tub, or spa be sure the wiring is performed by an electrician experienced in the special safety requirements for these types of installations.
- Outdoor receptacles must have covers that keep them dry even when appliances are plugged into them.
- Ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) are special devices designed to protect against electric shock and electrocution. They are required for most pool, spa or hot tub equipment. They may be in the form of an outlet or a circuit breaker. Test the GFCIs monthly according to the manufacturer’s instructions.”

Tips To Help Childproof Your Home
6/1/2017 (Permalink)
“Unintentional injury is one of the top killers of children in the U.S. Prevention can eliminate almost all of these injuries.
Take the proper safety measures and childproofing steps to keep your family safe at home.
Install safety latches on all cabinets and drawers to keep children from household products. Anything you know to be poisonous, place out of reach of children and lock it up.
Store household products and medicine away from food and beverages.
Use the stove's back burners and turn pot handles toward the back of the stove to keep hot pots and pans out of the reach of children.
Keep kitchenware and appliances out of reach and away from the edge of counters and tables.
Put visual reminders like the Mr. Yuk stickers from poison prevention centers on potential poisonous or hazardous items. Keep the poison center phone number (1-800-222-1222) somewhere visible as well.”

Federal consent decree expected to nearly quadruple Cleveland Heights' 2018 sewer bills
5/18/2017 (Permalink)
“The bottom line in "Phase One" of a federal Consent Decree will be a nearly $19 monthly increase in the average local sewer rates beginning in the fall.
That will nearly quadruple the current average monthly surcharge of just under $7, although the billing cycle for local sewer fees is quarterly, so customers won't see the increase until January.
After that, there will be 3 percent increases tacked on in 2019 and again in 2020, in order to raise $12 million for improvements to the 100-year-old system that is subject to "Sanitary Sewer Overflows."
These "SSO's" lead to discharges of raw sewage into tributaries that ultimately wind up in Lake Erie, especially during periods of heavy rainfall, and in direct violation of the Clean Water Act.”

Weather Fronts-Part 2
5/3/2017 (Permalink)
Yesterday we discussed cold fronts. Today we searched warm fronts. We decided to go back to the internet site we found the other day: https://scied.ucar.edu/webweather/weather-ingredients/weather-fronts . Please be sure to click the link to read the entire article.
“A warm front is the boundary between warm and cool (or cold) air when the warm air is replacing the cold air. Warm air at the surface pushes above the cool air mass, making clouds and storms. Warm fronts often bring stormy weather. Warm fronts often form on the east side of low-pressure systems where warmer air from the south is pushed north. A warm front typically replaces cool dry air with warm moist air.”

Weather Fronts
5/2/2017 (Permalink)
The weather reports can be confusing if you do not know what the terms mean. This morning watching the weather on the TV, they were discussing cold fronts. What exactly is a cold front? Looking on the internet, we came across this website: https://scied.ucar.edu/webweather/weather-ingredients/weather-fronts and found our answer. Here is part of the online article. Please be sure to click the link to read the entire article.
“A cold front is a warm-cold air boundary with the colder air replacing the warmer. As a cold front moves into an area, the heavier cool air pushes under the lighter warm air that it is replacing. The warm air becomes cooler as it rises. If the rising air is humid enough, the water vapor it contains will condense into clouds and precipitation may fall. As the cold front moves, warm, moist unstable air is usually replaced by cold, dry stable air.”

May Is Motorcycle Safety Month
4/18/2017 (Permalink)
In the month of May we observe National Motorcycle Safety Month. Here are a few facts to help you familiarize yourself. “Motorcyclists are much more vulnerable to crashes than other drivers. In 2007, the mileage death rate for motorcyclists in 2007 was 37 times greater than for passenger car occupants. Motorcycle safety also is an issue of increasing concern – fatalities involving drivers and motorcyclists increased 131 percent between 1998 and 2008, according to NSC.
Throughout Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, NSC encourages motorists to share the road with motorcyclists and be extra alert when they are nearby. NSC's tips include:
- Passenger car drivers must allow greater following distance behind a motorcycle. 2. Drivers also must show extra caution in intersections. Most crashes occur when a driver fails to see a motorcyclist and turns left in front of a motorcycle.”

Importance Of Homeowners Insurance For An Uninhabited Home
4/6/2017 (Permalink)
Many people think that since they are not living in a home that they own, it is not important to keep active insurance on the property. Maybe they think that since they have moved all of their contents out, it is no longer important? The fact is, there are several reasons why your home needs to protected with a homeowners policy. Often times in the winter people tend to turn their heat down in order to keep costs down, and this is often in a home that they do not visit daily. This is a recipe for disaster. This could lead to pipes freezing and potentially leaking or bursting (Warning: not maintaining utilities could also cause the insurance company to deny a claim Make sure you understand your policy terms before you purchase). Preventing Bed Bugs
3/15/2017 (Permalink)
“Looking to avoid bed bugs? Bed bug prevention is a lot easier than eliminating an existing infestation. According to the 2015 Bugs Without Borders survey, bed bugs remain the most difficult pest to treat - more difficult than cockroaches, termites and ants!
Depending on the scope of an infestation and the type of treatment used by a pest professional, it can take several treatments to completely eliminate bed bugs. Fortunately, there are many things that one can do to prevent bringing bed bugs into the home. Vigilance is the key to bed bug prevention. When out in public - whether at a hotel, store, movie theater or work place - it is important to be conscientious of all surroundings.
As the public's awareness of the bed bug resurgence grows, focus on bed bug prevention has also grown. Many Americans are modifying their behaviors to minimize their risk of an infestation. According to the 2011 Bed Bugs in America survey, 27 percent of respondents have inspected or washed clothing upon returning from a trip; 25 percent have checked a hotel room for bed bugs; 17 percent have inspected or vacuumed a suitcase upon returning from a trip and 12 percent have altered or canceled travel plans because of concern about bed bugs. “

Winter Weather
2/5/2017 (Permalink)
The following was copied directly from the following online article to get you started reading about winter weather safety. Click this link to read more: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/winter/snow.shtml
“Heavy snow can immobilize a region and paralyze a city, stranding commuters, closing airports, stopping the flow of supplies, and disrupting emergency and medical services. The weight of snow can cause roofs to collapse and knock down trees and power lines. Homes and farms may be isolated for days and unprotected livestock may be lost. In the mountains, heavy snow can lead to avalanches. The cost of snow removal, repairing damages, and the loss of business can have severe economic impacts on cities and towns.”

Draught-Proofing Your Home
2/2/2017 (Permalink)
“Here's a list of places where draughts occur, and what measures you can take to prevent them.
Along the top and bottom of skirting boards - use sealant to fill the gaps.
Between floorboards - a silicone-based filler that allows for some movement is best for filling the gaps in floorboards, or you can insulate the void beneath your floor.
Doors - fit draught-proofing strips between the door itself and the frame. This can apply to internal as well as external doors. For gaps between the bottom of the door and the floor, you can buy a special 'brush' or hinged flap draught excluder.
Loft hatches - put draught strips around the frame to keep out draughts. Also, the door itself can be insulated, typically with a polystyrene slab on the upper side.
Windows - draught-proofing strips work well around opening casements. Draughts also occur in cracks between the window frames and the surrounding walls - you can either use sealant, or putty here.”

Skunk Spray
2/2/2017 (Permalink)
“To catch even a whiff of a skunk's defensive spray is a uniquely horrid sensation. This is due in part to thiol, a chemical compound mainly comprised of sulfur and hydrogen, which is found in the musky spray of skunks, as well as in many other sources of stink, such as onions, garlic, feces, and rotting flesh. The specific thiols found in skunk spray, (E)-2-butene-1-thiol and 3-methyl-1-butanethiol, are especially volatile and dreadfully malodorous.
Skunks are able to eject their highly concentrated spray from their anuses with such force that it can cause temporary blindness when predators are sprayed directly in the face. Additional compounds in the spray, known as thioacetates, activate once they are exposed to water, which makes attempts to wash the spray off even smellier.”

Storing Food Safely
1/14/2017 (Permalink)
“Refrigerate or freeze perishables right away. Foods that require refrigeration should be put in the refrigerator as soon as you get them home. Stick to the "two-hour rule" for leaving items needing refrigeration out at room temperature. Never allow meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, or produce or other foods that require refrigeration to sit at room temperature for more than two hours—one hour if the air temperature is above 90° F. This also applies to items such as leftovers, "doggie bags," and take-out foods. Also, when putting food away, don't crowd the refrigerator or freezer so tightly that air can't circulate.
Keep your appliances at the proper temperatures. Keep the refrigerator temperature at or below 40° F (4° C). The freezer temperature should be 0° F (-18° C). Check temperatures periodically. Appliance thermometers are the best way of knowing these temperatures and are generally inexpensive.
Check storage directions on labels. Many items other than meats, vegetables, and dairy products need to be kept cold. If you've neglected to properly refrigerate something, it's usually best to throw it out.”

Winter Precipitation Information
1/10/2017 (Permalink)
“Most precipitation that forms in wintertime clouds starts out as snow because the top layer of the storm is usually cold enough to create snowflakes. Snowflakes are just collections of ice crystals that cling to each other as they fall toward the ground. Precipitation continues to fall as snow when the temperature remains at or below 0 degrees Celsius from the cloud base to the ground.
- Snow Flurries. Light snow falling for short durations. No accumulation or light dusting is all that is expected.
- Snow Showers. Snow falling at varying intensities for brief periods of time. Some accumulation is possible.
- Snow Squalls. Brief, intense snow showers accompanied by strong, gusty winds. Accumulation may be significant. Snow squalls are best known in the Great Lakes Region.
- Blowing Snow. Wind-driven snow that reduces visibility and causes significant drifting. Blowing snow may be snow that is falling and/or loose snow on the ground picked up by the wind.
- Blizzards. Winds over 35mph with snow and blowing snow, reducing visibility to 1/4 mile or less for at least 3 hours.”

Types of Winter Weather
12/18/2016 (Permalink)
“Blizzards are dangerous winter storms that are a combination of blowing snow and wind resulting in very low visibilities. While heavy snowfalls and severe cold often accompany blizzards, they are not required. Sometimes strong winds pick up snow that has already fallen, creating a ground blizzard.
An ice storm is a storm which results in the accumulation of at least .25” of ice on exposed surfaces. They create hazardous driving and walking conditions. Tree branches and powerlines can easily snap under the weight of the ice.
Lake effect storms are not low pressure system storms. As a cold, dry air mass moves over the Great Lakes regions, the air picks up lots of moisture from the Great Lakes. This air, now full of water, dumps the water as snow in areas generally to the south and east of the lakes.”

Coldest Day of the Year
12/2/2016 (Permalink)
According to Susan Osborne’s November 18, 2014 article located online https://www.climate.gov/news-features/featured-images/whats-coldest-day-year “As winter approaches, much of the United States is beginning to brace for the cold, while some areas have already experienced their coldest day of the year. To give you a better idea of the coldest time of year for your area, NOAA's National Climatic Data Center has created a new “Coldest Day of the Year” map.
This map is derived from the 1981–2010 U.S. Climate Normals—"the Normals," for short. The Normals are 30-year averages of climate conditions from weather station data across the country, including the average low temperature for each day. From these values, scientists can identify which day of the year, on average, has the lowest minimum temperature, a.k.a. the “coldest day." Preventing Frozen Pipes
11/17/2016 (Permalink)
- “Insulate pipes, especially those close to outside walls, attics or crawl spaces where the chance of freezing is greatest
- Seal air leaks surrounding or near pipes
- Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage
- Disconnect all outdoor hoses and turn off water to exterior faucets and sprinkler systems
- Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing
- Keep heat at 55 degrees F. or higher even when you are out of town
- During a cold spell turn on both hot and cold faucets near outside walls to allow a small trickle of water to run during the night”

What Is Thundersnow?
11/10/2016 (Permalink)
“Although thunderstorms are less common in the winter, sometimes lightning can occur within snowstorms and is called thundersnow. Thundersnow can be found where there is relatively strong instability and abundant moisture above the surface, such as above a warm front. Thundersnow is sometimes observed downstream of the Great Salt Lake and the Great Lakes during lake-effect snowstorms too.”

What is Air Pressure?
10/18/2016 (Permalink)
“Air molecules constantly bounce off each other and everything else around them. The force exerted by these air molecules is called air pressure. Where air molecules are packed closely, air pressure is high. Where air molecules spread out, air pressure is low. For example, the air molecules inside this balloon are at higher pressure than the molecules outside the balloon.”

Nor'easter Defined
10/17/2016 (Permalink)
“The official definition of a “Nor'easter” is a strong low pressure system that affects the Mid-Atlantic and New England states. It can form over the land of the eastern U.S. or over the Atlantic coastal waters. These winter events are notorious for producing heavy snow, rain, and tremendous waves that crash onto Atlantic beaches, often causing beach erosion and structural damage. Wind gusts associated with these storms can exceed hurricane force in intensity. A nor'easter gets its name from the continuously strong northeasterly winds blowing in from the ocean ahead of the storm and over the coastal areas. What makes them so strong is the warm and moist air from the Atlantic that feeds the storm, causing it to grow explosively.”

Damaging Wind Facts
10/11/2016 (Permalink)
“What are damaging winds?
Damaging winds are often called “straight-line” winds to differentiate the damage they cause from tornado damage. Strong thunderstorm winds can come from a number of different processes. Most thunderstorm winds that cause damage at the ground are a result of outflow generated by a thunderstorm downdraft. Damaging winds are classified as those exceeding 50-60 mph.
Are damaging winds really a big deal?
Damage from severe thunderstorm winds account for half of all severe reports in the lower 48 states and is more common than damage from tornadoes. Wind speeds can reach up to 100 mph and can produce a damage path extending for hundreds of miles.”

Thunderstorm Facts
9/29/2016 (Permalink)
“Worldwide, there are an estimated 16 million thunderstorms each year, and at any given moment, there are roughly 2,000 thunderstorms in progress. There are about 100,000 thunderstorms each year in the U.S. alone. About 10% of these reach severe levels. Thunderstorms are most likely in the spring and summer months and during the afternoon and evening hours, but they can occur year-round and at all hours.
Along the Gulf Coast and across the southeastern and western states, most thunderstorms occur during the afternoon. Thunderstorms frequently occur in the late afternoon and at night in the Plains states.”

Do you have the right backup generator?
9/16/2016 (Permalink)
The following tips were copied directly from http://energy.gov/oe/community-guidelines-energy-emergencies/using-backup-generators-choosing-right-backup-generator-0 as a snippet to get you started on your way to choosing the right home backup generator.
- “Determine the amount of power you will need—How much power do you need to operate equipment and appliances connected to the generator?
- Portable generators made for household use can provide temporary power to a small number of selected appliances or lights. For example, light bulb wattage indicates the power needed for lighting. Appliance and equipment labels indicate their power requirements. If you can’t determine the amount of power you will need, ask an electrician.
- Choose the generator’s fuel source—Backup generators are typically powered by either diesel fuel or natural gas, and both have associated advantages and disadvantages. Speak with your utility company or an experienced electrician, engineer, and/or sales consultant who knows exactly what kind of generator may be needed based on your needs.”

El Nino and La Nina Events
9/8/2016 (Permalink)
“El Niño and La Niña events are a natural part of the global climate system. They occur when the Pacific Ocean and the atmosphere above it change from their neutral ('normal') state for several seasons. El Niño events are associated with a warming of the central and eastern tropical Pacific, while La Niña events are the reverse, with a sustained cooling of these same areas.” Source: http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/enso/history/ln-2010-12/ENSO-what.shtml

What does El Nino and La Nina Mean?
9/7/2016 (Permalink)
“The term El Niño translates from Spanish as 'the boy-child'. Peruvian fishermen originally used the term to describe the appearance, around Christmas, of a warm ocean current off the South American coast. It is now the commonly accepted term to describe the warming of the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. La Niña translates as 'girl-child' and is the opposite ENSO phase to El Niño.” Source: http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/enso/history/ln-2010-12/ENSO-what.shtml

Food Safety After A Disaster
8/25/2016 (Permalink)
This is a great reminder about food safety after a disaster:
“Do not consume anything that flood water may have touched. Throw out containers with screw-caps, snap lids, twist caps, flip tops, home-canned food or traditional soda bottle-style crimped caps if flood water may have touched them. Do not eat food packaged or wrapped in plastic, cardboard, cloth or similar materials or containers that have touched flood waters” (Source: http://www.cdc.gov/disasters/psa/packagedfood.html).

Facts About Water-Did You Know?
8/4/2016 (Permalink)
“Approximately 5 to 10 percent of American homes have water leaks that drip away 90 gallons a day or more! Many of these leaks reside in old fixtures, such as leaky toilets and faucets. In fact, water lost by these leaky residences could be reduced by more than 30,000 gallons if new, efficient fixtures were installed. If the 5 percent of American homes that leak the most corrected those leaks—it could save more than 177 billion gallons of water annually!Using WaterSense labeled faucets or faucet accessories could reduce a household's faucet water use by more than 500 gallons annually—that's enough water to do 14 loads of laundry.WaterSense labeled faucets and faucet accessories can reduce excessive flow volumes by more than 30 percent without sacrificing performance.”Source: https://www3.epa.gov/watersense/about_us/facts.html Please click the link to read more facts from the online EPA source.

What is Humidity?
8/1/2016 (Permalink)
According to Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humidity )
“Humidity is the amount of water vapor in the air. Water vapor is the gaseous state of water and is invisible. Humidity indicates the likelihood of precipitation, dew, or fog. Higher humidity reduces the effectiveness of sweating in cooling the body by reducing the rate of evaporation of moisture from the skin. This effect is calculated in a heat index table or humidex. The amount of water vapor that is needed to achieve saturation increases as the temperature increases. As temperature decreases, the amount of water vapor needed to reach saturation also decreases. As the temperature of a parcel of air becomes lower it will eventually reach the point of saturation without adding or losing water mass.” Click the link above to continue reading the online article.

FEMA

Here is what FEMA says about mitigation (The following was portion copied directly from: https://www.fema.gov/what-mitigation )
“Effective mitigation requires that we all understand local risks, address the hard choices, and invest in long-term community well-being. Without mitigation actions, we jeopardize our safety, financial security and self-reliance.
· Disasters can happen at anytime and anyplace; their human and financial consequences are hard to predict.
· The number of disasters each year is increasing but only 50% of events trigger Federal assistance.
· FEMA's mitigation programs help reduce the impact of events—and our dependence on taxpayers and the Treasury for disaster relief.
FEMA's Federal Insurance and Mitigation Administration (FIMA) manages the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and implements a variety of programs authorized by Congress to reduce losses that may result from natural disasters. Effective mitigation efforts can break the cycle of disaster damage, reconstruction, and repeated damage. FEMA's mitigation and insurance efforts are organized into three primary activities that help states, tribes, territories and localities achieve the highest level of mitigation: Risk Analysis, Risk Reduction, and Risk Insurance. Through these activities and FEMA's day-to-day work across the country, communities are able to make better mitigation decisions before, during, and after disasters.”

“’It’s important to be on the lookout for hazards throughout the day. Whether you’re walking to work, taking care of an elderly relative or watching your children, the National Safety Council offers a variety of tips to help stay safe all the time:
Avoid distracted walking. Stop walking and move to the side when reading emails or texts. Never cross a street while using an electronic device.Falls are the leading cause of death for older adults. Install anti-slip mats and grab bars in the bath or shower, and handrails on stairs. In addition, ensure every room and stairway has adequate lighting, which may include nightlights.More than one-third of injuries and deaths among children occur at home. Stay vigilant for sources of potential injury, including pools, bathtubs, fireplaces, grills, and chemicals stored under the sink or in your garage.Wherever you are, consider the hazards unique to the location. A fun outing could turn stressful quickly if you’re injured.
Going to a ballgame? Watch for foul balls.Heading to a concert? Consider earplugs to help protect your hearing. Check for cables that may run along floors.Visiting someplace new? Designate a meeting place in case you get separated.”This information was copied from the above link as a source of information and was not written by SERVPRO of Beachwood.

June is National Safety Month- Water Safety Tips for Kids

June is
The following was copied directly from:
http://www.nsc.org/Membership%20Site%20Document%20Library/2016-NSM/2016-NSM-Protect-Kids-Around-Water.pdf
“Whether you live in a climate that’s warm year-round or you enjoy outdoor activities during the summer, swimming and water are likely to be a big part of family fun. But the importance of safety around water cannot be overstated. Water safety is a part of daily life no matter where you live. Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional death in children ages 1 to 14 (Injury Facts ®, 2016). While many are aware of the importance of safety around pools and at the beach, parents also need to supervise their children near bathtubs. Nearly 30 percent of home drowning incidents occur when a child falls into a pool or is left alone in the bathtub (Injury Facts, 2016). Protect Your Children • Be attentive when your children are near water. Teach children never to go near or into water alone – an adult should always be present. Designate an adult (or two) to be a “water watcher” and actively supervise children who are swimming. Drowning can happen silently, in seconds, and in just an inch of water. • Stay nearby. When infants and toddlers are in the water, adults should never be more than an arm’s length away. Gather all items you need before starting a child’s bath. And at pools, even though there may be a lifeguard, it is important to watch over older children as well. • Get a good life jacket. Traditional pool floats, like water wings, inner tubes and pool noodles, aren’t designed to keep kids safe. Use a life jacket approved by the Coast Guard to be safer. • Know what to do in an emergency. Make sure that you and anyone who takes care of your children are trained in CPR, so you’ll all be ready if there’s ever a need. Find a class in your area.”

The following information was copied by SERVPRO of Beachwood directly from:
https://www.firstenergycorp.com/help/outages/what_to_do_if_youlosepower/using_backup_generators.html
“Before installing your backup generator, follow all instructions in the manufacturer's written documentation, such as an operating manual, and all local building codes, especially regarding placement of the unit and safe electrical connections. Not following these precautions may result in hazardous conditions, including the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning or electrocution.
In addition, never connect a generator directly to your home's electrical system without a proper isolation device, a switch that disconnects your house from our power lines while your generator is operating, and vice versa. This applies to both portable generators and stationary units.
To have an isolation device installed, contact a qualified electrician. Unless our lines are positively isolated from your home, operating a generator connected into your home's wiring system could start a fire and/or electrocute a service crew member working to restore your power.”

· “To safeguard your equipment and appliances - and to ease the initial load when power is restored - turn off or unplug televisions, VCRs, DVD players, stereos, computers, and appliances that use electric motors such as refrigerators, freezers or air conditioners, until power is restored. Leave an incandescent light on so you know when the power comes back on.
· Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed. These appliances are well insulated, so food will keep for hours if opening the door is kept to a minimum.
· Use a flashlight or battery-powered lantern for light. Use care when burning candles; open flames are a dangerous fire hazard.
· During cold weather, keep warm safely. Put on extra clothes or wrap up in blankets. DON'T rely on gas stoves, charcoal grills or other open-flame heat sources. Deadly carbon monoxide gas - which is odorless and invisible - may build up in your home without you realizing it.
To report an outage:
First check your circuit breakers or fuses. If no breaker is tripped or fuse is blown, the problem may be in the connection between our wires and your home. Report your outage using one of the following methods:Call our toll-free, 24-hour Outage Reporting Line, 1-888-LIGHTSS

El Nino

The following was copied directly from: https://www.almanac.com/blog/weather/weather/bye-bye-el-nino
“The El Niño is on its way out. It brought more rain in some areas plus lower summer food and cooling prices. But his sister is coming, and La Niña is no lady.
The El Niño weather pattern has been in place since last summer over the central Pacific Ocean; it brought above-average rainfall and surprisingly warm temperatures. However, the waters are cooling even more quickly than experts thought it would.
Unfortunately, this means scientists are expecting its twin sister, the cold, dry La Niña to arrive even earlier. The result will affect farms, pastures and, yes, your lawn and garden.
You see, when one-tenth of the world’s surface gets unusually hot or cold, it changes global weather. El Niño (which is Spanish for “The Boy) was named by South Americans for the Christ child and brings lovely moderate wet summers here in the US. La Niña (which is Spanish for “The Girl”) is just the opposite. The La Niña is a real, cool chick.
It’s happening quickly. Last month, the El Niño was very strong—er—hot. Now the event is weak, barely above the 0.5°C (0.9°F) needed to qualify as an El Niño. By next month, it will probably be average, neither hot, nor cold. Ahhh—average!”

Tree Safety
4/21/2016 (Permalink)
The following was copied directly from:https://www.firstenergycorp.com/help/safety/trees.html
"Trees are a leading cause of electrical power outages. In fact when trees and power lines touch it creates a very dangerous situation that may even be deadly to anyone in close proximity.
To help ensure reliable and safe electric service, FirstEnergy's Vegetation Management Program works to keep our transmission and distribution rights-of-way free of incompatible trees and other vegetation.
Professional vegetation management crews assess each situation to determine the best approach to prevent trees from interfering with electrical facilities. Based on this assessment, they may use power saws, EPA-approved herbicides, mechanical equipment, or a combination of methods to control the vegetation.
Compatible shrubs that do not interfere with electric facilities are not disturbed. A diverse mixture of grasses, low growing shrubs and other ground cover preferred by birds, deer and small animals promote a thriving wildlife habitat. In this way, well-managed electric rights-of-way provide the food and cover wildlife need to survive."

Gas Safety

The following was copied directly from: https://www.dom.com/residential/dominion-east-ohio/safety/gas-safety-in-the-home
"If you smell gas, suspect a leak or if there is an explosion or fire, call Dominion right away. Use these numbers 24 hours a day, everyday.
Dominion East Ohio customers: 1-877-542-2630. An alternate number is on the front of your bill, or in your local phone directory."
"Natural gas is great for heating, cooking and other uses in the home. It has an excellent safety record due to the physical characteristics of the gas itself. Possessing a very narrow range of flammability, natural gas only allows for combustion in a concentration of 4 to 15 percent per volume of air. Above and below these amounts, it will not burn.
Natural gas is lighter than air, and thus, can dissipate into the air rapidly, making accidental combustion difficult. To further prevent accidents, natural gas has a very high ignition temperature, at about 1100 degrees Fahrenheit. This is almost twice the ignition temperature for gasoline.
All together, these factors add up to making accidental ignition or combustion of natural gas an unlikely event. Nonetheless, helping you learn how to use clean burning natural gas safely throughout your home is one of our top priorities.
If you smell gas...
- Do not attempt to locate gas leaks.
- Do not remain in the building when there is a strong gas odor. From a safe distance, be ready to let our representative into your home or business so he or she can investigate.
- Do not turn on or off any battery-powered, rechargeable or electrical device, including phones, garage door opener, radios, TVs, computers or any device that could create a spark.
- Do not turn on or turn off any lights or electrical switches, or unplug appliances.
- Do not use telephones of any type, including cordless, cell or landline.
- Do not use elevators.
- Do not position or operate vehicles and power equipment where leaking gas may be present.
- Do not smoke or use lighters, matches or other open flames.
Keep Gas Appliances Operating Safely
- Keep forced-air furnace filters clean. Clean or replace them according to the manufacturer's recommendation.
- Avoid using or storing these products near the furnace: paint stripper, fabric or water softener, bleach, adhesives, or salt for melting ice. The chlorine or fluorine in these items can lead to furnace corrosion.
- If your owner's manual recommends it, oil the furnace fan, motor and bearings.
- Keep your heat registers and cold-air returns clean so the air can flow properly. Also, arrange your furniture and drapes so they don't block the air flow.
- Have a qualified heating contractor inspect your furnace or boiler annually. A properly tuned furnace saves energy and helps avoid costly repairs.
- Check the flue to make sure it is clean and open. Any fuel that does not burn completely can create harmful levels of carbon monoxide (CO). CO is a gas with no color, odor or taste. It can collect in your home if a fuel-burning appliance isn't working properly or venting as it should."

Backup Generators
4/18/2016 (Permalink)
The following was copied directly from: https://www.firstenergycorp.com/help/safety/using-electricity/backup-generators.html
"Backup generators can pose a risk of shock and electrocution, especially if they are operated in wet conditions. Because generators must be operated outdoors, it is important to pay special attention to weather and environmental conditions to prevent electrical accidents.
Follow these important electrical safety tips at all times when operating your backup generator:
- Operate the generator on a dry surface where water cannot reach it, or puddle or drain under it.
- Dry your hands, if wet, before touching the generator.
- If you must use a generator in wet conditions, protect the generator from moisture (as described in the owner's manual) to help avoid shock or electrocution hazard. This should be done without operating the generator indoors or near openings to any building that can be occupied in order to help avoid CO hazards.
- NEVER try to power home wiring by plugging the generator into a wall outlet, a practice known as "backfeeding." This is extremely dangerous and presents an electrocution risk to utility workers and neighbors served by the same circuit. It also bypasses some of the built-in household circuit protection devices.
When connecting appliances to the generator using an extension cord, follow these steps:
- Use heavy-duty extension cords that are specifically designed for outdoor use.
- Make sure the wattage rating for each cord exceeds the total wattage of all appliances connected to it.
- Use extension cords that are long enough to allow the generator to be placed outdoors and far away from windows, doors and vents to the home or to other structures that could be occupied.
- Check that the entire length of each cord is free of cuts or tears and that the plug has all three (or four) prongs.
- Protect the cord from getting pinched or crushed, and follow all cord safety labels including any limits on cord length.
In addition, use care when handling and storing fuel for your generator to avoid potential fire hazards:
- Never store fuel for your generator inside the home. Gasoline, propane, kerosene, and other flammable liquids should be stored outside of living areas in properly-labeled, non-glass safety containers. Do not store any of these substances near a fuel-burning appliance, such as a natural gas water heater in a garage.
- Before refueling a generator, turn it off and let it cool down for at least two minutes before removing the fuel cap. Gasoline spilled on hot engine parts could ignite. Never refuel a running portable generator."

Yes, Cleveland it can happen in April. According to Mark Johnson at https://www.facebook.com/MarkJohnsonWeather/?fref=nf
"IT CAN HAPPEN. The EPIC Snowstorm of April, 1901!"
Mark Johnson writes at: http://www.newsnet5.com/weather/forecast/todays-forecast/todays-forecast-latest-power-of-5-weather-updates
"FRIDAY FORECAST ALERT: SIGNIFICANT SNOW WILL IMPACT PARTS OF NORTHERN OHIO FRIDAY NIGHT AND SATURDAY MORNING.
Computer model guidance continues to hone in on some heavy snow for parts of the NewsChannel5 viewing area beginning Friday evening and continuing thru Saturday morning. THE SET-UP: A strong Alberta Clipper surface low pressure system will slide across Northern Ohio Friday night/early Saturday morning. A band of moderate to heavy snow will be swirling around the surface low as it moves east thru the region. TIMING: The precipitation will begin during the Friday afternoon rush hour as scattered rain showers and then quickly change over to snow during the evening. A band of moderate to heavy snow will then set up across Northern Ohio as the low rotates thru after 10pm. A few hours of heavy, 1-inch per hour snowfall can be expected. The snow will continue through early to mid morning Saturday and then slowly end from west to east during the afternoon.SNOWFALL FORECAST: Snowfall amounts of 2 to 6 inches will be common across Northern Ohio by midday Saturday. Some spots from Northern Lorain County east thru Greater Cleveland and into Lake, Geauga & Ashtabula Counties may see 6 to 8 inches by early afternoon Saturday. We'll also monitor Northern Medina and Northern Summit Counties for some of these heavier snow amounts.IMPACTS: Travel Friday night will become slow and slippery as snow increases and begins to accumulate. Temperatures near the freezing mark and below should allow much of the overnight snow to stick and stay, making Saturday morning events, ball games, outdoor practices unlikely. Untreated surfaces will be snow covered and slippery. Visibility will be low in areas of moderate to heavy snow. Snow will taper off from west to east during the early to mid afternoon hours on Saturday. As is always the case, any last-minute shifts in the path of the surface low will also change where the areas of heavy snow will fall. We will continue to monitor this developing forecast through the day Friday. Stay connected with us on NewsChannel5 and via Facebook and Twitter! Stay tuned as later forecasts will fine tune the snow amounts and placement!" How Historic Is This April Cold? April Snow?
4/6/2016 (Permalink)
The title and the following was copied directly from: http://sabolscience.blogspot.com/2016/04/how-historic-is-this-april-cold-april.html
"There is little sign that this cold April will end anytime soon. The cold air this weekend will be similar to last weekend. In fact, the 850mB (5000 ft) temps over Lake Erie, the key component for determining lake effect snow amounts, might crack the top 5 coldest ever for the month of April since 1950!
Both the GFS and the European show pretty much the same amount of cold as of this writing.
The pattern shows some signs of moderation across the eastern US but not until at least the midway point of the month. Another wave of colder air will follow this weekend's cold by the middle of next week.
The lack of snowfall this winter is almost historic. So far, our season snow total is the lowest since the winter of 1931-32.
April snowfall of at least one inch happens roughly 50% of the time. Here is a look at the percentage of seasonal snowfall in April. This past weekend's snowfall brings this year's percentage up to 5%. Expect snow chances to climb with each burst of colder air through the middle of the month."
Ohio Severe Weather Committee
4/5/2016 (Permalink)
Did you know Ohio has a severe weather committee?
The following was copied directly from http://www.weathersafety.ohio.gov/AboutUs.aspx :
“Since 1978, the Ohio Committee for Severe Weather Awareness (OCSWA) has been dedicated in educating Ohioans about the natural disasters that typically affect the state, and encourage Ohio residents to plan and prepare for severe weather incidents before they happen.
The Ohio Committee for Severe Weather Awareness, in a coordinated effort with the Governor, promotes statewide severe weather safety campaigns twice a year: in the spring - generally during the last week of March; and in late autumn - generally during the third week of November, to promote winter storm safety and preparedness.
A statewide tornado drill is conducted on the Wednesday of Spring Severe Weather Awareness Week. County emergency management agencies test their outdoor warning sirens during the drill, and homes, schools and businesses are encouraged to practice their tornado drills and emergency plans.
It is OCSWA’s goal to inform residents of weather hazards that typically affect Ohio, and encourage families to plan ahead and know what to do during different weather and home emergencies; organize emergency preparedness kits; and practice safety drills to protect themselves from severe weather emergencies and home fires.”

Lightning Facts
3/23/2016 (Permalink)
http://www.ucar.edu/communications/factsheets/Lightning.html
"Spectacular, powerful, and sometimes deadly, lightning is one of the most common weather phenomena. Recent satellite data suggests that there are more than 3 million lightning flashes worldwide per day, or about 40 flashes per second on average. This includes flashes within or between clouds as well as flashes extending from cloud to ground. Lightning has also been observed on the planets Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn. Yet despite its frequent occurrence, lightning is still not completely understood.
Lightning is generated in cumulonimbus clouds (thunderheads), which have a negative electrical charge at the base and a positive charge at top. Scientists are not certain how these charges develop; they do know the charges are carried by water droplets and ice crystals. The negative charge at the cloud's base causes a "shadow" of positive charge on the earth below.
Conditions are then right to form an electrical circuit--this is what lightning is. An insulator--the air--holds up the connection, but eventually the negative charge within the cloud grows too great for the air to restrain it. An electrical impulse, called a leader, reaches downward from the cloud in steps, each step covering about 50 meters (150 feet). When the leader nears the ground, streamers arise to meet it, and the circuit is complete. A bright streak of electricity, the stroke of lightning, ascends along the same course the leader took. Several more strokes may follow this same path.
The whole sequence is "lightning fast." The leader travels at 220,000 kilometers (136,000 miles) per hour, the pauses between steps take 50 millionths of a second, the return stroke moves at over 100 million kilometers (62 million miles) per hour, and all subsequent strokes are so fast the eye sees a single flickering lightning bolt.
There are many variations. About half the time, lightning strikes between clouds or within a single cloud rather than reaching the earth. A rare but powerful type of lightning comes from a positively charged cloud that the wind has torn away from its negatively charged parent. Lightning can take other shapes as well: a ball, ribbon, sheet, or string of beads.
Benjamin Franklin grossly underestimated the force of lightning when he did his kite-and-key experiment. A current of 160,000 amperes has been recorded in one extremely powerful bolt. An average stroke can easily release 250 kilowatt-hours of energy, enough to operate a 100-watt light bulb continuously for more than three months. And at 30,000 degrees Celsius (54,032 degrees Fahrenheit), lightning is five or six times as hot as the surface of the sun. All of this energy is contained in a channel about the width of a human thumb.
Modern-day Ben Franklins at NCAR use more up-to-date techniques to investigate lightning. A specially equipped sailplane leased by NCAR has gathered data from inside electrical storms over Florida, New Mexico, and Colorado. Since the 1980s, a much clearer picture of lightning distribution has emerged from a nationwide network of detectors that tracks cloud-to-ground strikes. Data from this network often appear on television weathercasts in a map on which dots or x's indicate each flash. And starting in the mid-1990s, NASA's Optical Transient Detector began collected images of lightning flashes in clouds around the globe from an altitude of about 710 kilometers (446 miles) .
Lightning Safety
Lightning kills more people than tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, or any other kind of bad weather. But because lightning usually kills people one at a time, it tends to be underrated as a hazard. The best protection against lightning is to stay indoors during a thunderstorm. But stay away from the telephone; about 1% of people killed by lightning were talking on the phone at the time. The only kind of building to avoid is a small shelter in an open field. If you cannot reach a building, a car offers excellent protection.
The highest point within the positively charged shadow under a thundercloud--a skyscraper, a tree in a meadow, a golfer--is the easiest place for the leader to reach. So avoid high places during storms."
- Never take shelter under the only tree in an open area; if you must shelter under trees, look for a grove of uniform height.
- If you are the tallest thing around, crouch down to make yourself shorter than some natural feature (but limit the part of your body contacting the ground--don't lie flat).
- More people are killed by a high-voltage current reaching out from a lightning bolt than by being struck directly, so keep a good distance from the high places that attract lightning.
- Stay away from good conductors like wire fences or metal pipes, and keep out of water. If you are in an open boat, crouch in the middle of the boat."

Spring and Summer Severe Weather Tips
3/10/2016 (Permalink)
- "Be educated – Understand the difference between a watch and a warning. A watch means that conditions are favorable; a warning means activity has been spotted in the county either by a trained weather spotter or on radar.
- Stay informed – Pay attention and seek out specific details about the warning from local news stations or the National Weather Service.
- Stay safe – Seek immediate shelter during a warning. During a severe thunderstorm warning, stay inside. During a tornado warning, shelter-in-place in one of your safe areas until an “all clear” has been given." (Source:https://parent.osu.edu/articles/id/162)

Heavy Rain and Snow Storm Watch Cleveland, Ohio
2/23/2016 (Permalink)
https://www.facebook.com/ScottSabolFanPage/?fref=nf
Mark Johnson https://www.facebook.com/MarkJohnsonWeather/?fref=photo said" WINTER STORM UPDATE: Right now, Heavy Rain is expected Wednesday transitioning to a heavy, wet snow by Thursday morning. Turing colder Thursday. Exact storm track still unknown, but right now, it appears the surface low pressure wants to track right up I-71. That means 40s & rain Wednesday followed by a few inches snow Thursday. Stay tuned."
Scott Sabol https://www.facebook.com/ScottSabolFanPage/?fref=ts said " Yet another southern storm (remember our winter outlook which highlighted these back last year). This one will track further WEST across Ohio late Wednesday. HOWEVER, its still a bit too early in determining whether or not this will change back east. The position of the two lows reflected in the upper levels (right most box on the graphic below) have bounced back and forth over the last 24 hours. Eventually, one will win out. So as of this writing, our forecast is for RAIN and WIND (40s) on Wednesday with a changeover early Thursday to wet snow. Initial snowfall forecast is for 1-3" region wide Thursday. More changes ahead...stay tuned."

10/30/2015 (Permalink)
Space heaters, though beloved for the warmth they provide, can be extremely dangerous if not used properly. Make sure you are keeping your family safe. SERVPRO of Beachwood is available 24/7 if you need us!
Tips from the Red Cross to prevent frozen pipes:
12/18/2014 (Permalink)
1) Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.
2) Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals up out of the reach of children.
3) When the temperature is very low outside, let the cold water drip from faucets served by exposed pipes or pipes in exterior walls. Running water through the pipe - even at a trickle - helps prevent pipes from freezing because the temperature of the water running through it is above freezing.
4) Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night. By temporarily suspending the use of lower nighttime temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent damage if pipes freeze and burst.
5) If you will be going away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55ºF.
