Supporting Our Cleveland Community One Heart at a Time

Recently, some members of SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast attended the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women Event.
Recently, some members of SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast attended the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women Event. It is so important for us to connect with others in our community. The month of March is designated to celebrate and recognize all women, which includes advocating for their mental and physical health. Did you know that the number one cause of death for women is heart disease and stroke?
Women can develop heart disease, which refers to a range of conditions that affect the heart, blood vessels, and circulation. In fact, heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in many countries, including the United States.
Some common types of heart disease that can affect women include:
Coronary artery disease: This occurs when the arteries that supply blood to the heart become narrow or blocked, reducing blood flow to the heart muscle. This can lead to chest pain or discomfort (angina), heart attack, or even sudden cardiac arrest.
Heart failure: This occurs when the heart is unable to pump blood effectively, leading to fatigue, shortness of breath, and other symptoms.
Arrhythmias: These are abnormal heart rhythms that can cause palpitations, dizziness, or fainting.
Valvular heart disease: This occurs when the valves in the heart do not function properly, leading to symptoms such as shortness of breath or swelling in the legs.
Women may experience different symptoms of heart disease compared to men. For example, women may experience more subtle symptoms such as fatigue, shortness of breath, or back pain. Women may also be more likely to have a heart attack without experiencing chest pain.
To reduce the risk of heart disease, women should adopt healthy lifestyle habits such as maintaining a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet, getting regular exercise, not smoking, and managing stress. Women with a family history of heart disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes should also talk to their Pepper Pike healthcare provider about their risk and how to manage it.

Support Your Local Cleveland Area Blood Drive: March is Red Cross Month!
3/8/2021 (Permalink)
During World War II, the American Red Cross launched a national blood donation program to support the United States armed forces, resulting in over 13 million pints of blood donated. In fact, in 1943, President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared March as “Red Cross Month” to urge Americans to contribute to the nation’s war effort.
Almost 100 years later, Americans are finding themselves amid a global pandemic, while families are still relying on the Red Cross for not only blood donations, but comfort and care for disasters, support for military and veterans, and lifesaving training. In the past year, over 300,000 Americans became Red Cross volunteers, including 550 locally in Northern Ohio.
It is time once again for America to unite! Red Cross Volunteers are always needed and welcomed. Blood donations are considered the gift of life and can even be used to treat dire medical cases.
If you cannot give blood, you can support Red Cross disaster relief financially on Giving Day, March 24th. Every 8 minutes, the Red Cross responds to a disaster such as a house fire. A gift of $95, for example, will feed a family of three for a day and provide blankets and other essentials.
The American Red Cross service area includes, but is not limited to Cleveland Heights, Beachwood, and Lyndhurst. To schedule a blood donation, visit https://www.redcross.org/give-blood.html or to make a financial gift, go to https://www.redcross.org/donate/donation.html/ or call 1-800-REDCROSS.
Celebrating MLK and What It Has Meant for the Cleveland Area
1/18/2021 (Permalink)
Marked as the third Monday in January, MLK Day is a day to remember activist and Civil Rights Movement leader Martin Luther King Jr., who fought for integration among races and advocated for nonviolent methods of protest. This day was first observed in 1986; however, it was not celebrated in all 50 states until the year 2000. Dr. King’s speech took place on August 28th, 1963 at the Lincoln Memorial in 1963, and he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1964.
Even before this, according to Britannica.com, he was prominent in “a bus boycott by African Americans in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1955, …founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957, …led the 1963 March on Washington, …[and was] the most influential of African American civil rights leaders during the 1960s.” For more information, check out: https://www.britannica.com/topic/Martin-Luther-King-Jr-Day.
He was assassinated on April 4th, 1968 at the age of 39. He was in Memphis, TN supporting a sanitation worker strike and was shot on a motel balcony. To this day, we remember the remarkable impact he has had on all of us. MLK is most known for his “I Have A Dream Speech, which can be heard in its entirety at the following link: https://www.npr.org/2010/01/18/122701268/i-have-a-dream-speech-in-its-entirety.
This holiday is celebrated in areas including, but not limited to Euclid, Beachwood, and Mayfield Heights.

Keeping Your Pets Safe During The Upcoming Cold Weather in East Cleveland, OH
11/1/2020 (Permalink)
As the outside temperatures start to drop, be sure that you take the necessary steps to ensure your pets’ safety this winter, according to https://www.greatplainsspca.org/top-10-winter-weather-tips-pets/.
-Wipe off their paws after being outside to prevent them from carrying chemicals into the house.
-Keep them leashed in situations that you might get separated from them as the normal scents that help them find their way home may be blocked from the snow.
-Leave them at home instead of leaving them in your cold car, as this can be dangerous to their health.
-Wear reflective gear on you and your pet to ensure you both are seen at night.
-Be prepared by creating emergency plans, which include food, water, and medication for your family and your pets.

How to Prepare For A Safe Return to Your Mayfield Heights School In Fall 2020
11/1/2020 (Permalink)
With schools in the Shaker Heights area starting to open up and students begin to return to in-person classes, it is important that administrators and families take all necessary precautions. According to the CDC guidelines, it is critical that all administrators:
- Engage and encourage everyone in the school and the Lyndhurst community to practice preventive behaviors (e.g., social distancing, masks, hand hygiene, and use of cohourting).
- Communicate, educate, and reinforce appropriate hygiene and social distancing practices in ways that are developmentally appropriate for students, teachers, and staff.
- Maintain healthy environments (e.g., cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces).
- Repurpose unused or underutilized school spaces to increase classroom space and facilitate social distancing, including outside spaces, where feasible.
- Develop a proactive plan for when a student or staff member tests positive for COVID-19.
- Educate parents and caregivers on the importance of monitoring for and responding to the symptoms of COVID-19 at home.
- Develop ongoing channels of communication with state and local health departments to stay updated on COVID-19 transmission and response in your local area.
In-person schooling is important, not only for academic purposes, but also for students’ social and emotional health, mental health, and continuity of other special services. It is our hope, here at SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast, that you all remain safe and healthy as our Cleveland communities begin to open back up again.

Happy Pinktober from SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast
10/15/2019 (Permalink)
Breast Cancer Awareness
October is not only for Halloween, it’s also National Breast Cancer Awareness Month! An entire month dedicated to raise awareness and money for breast cancer research. We all have a woman in our lives that we love- a mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend or daughter- and we here at SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast would like to help spread the word and celebrate our breast cancer warriors!
Just like you should check your homes’ smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors and fire extinguishers each year for proper operation- women of a certain age should get a mammogram. Mammograms can provide early detection for breast cancer. Protect your health like you protect your Beachwood home! And while you’re at it- wear pink to support those women who have battled breast cancer, join a walk for the cure in your Cleveland area, sponsor a walker or simply make a donation to your favorite Breast Cancer charity.
We here at SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast hope everyone has a safe, happy and HEALTHY October. Think pink for the cure!
Happy National Fire Pup Day from SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast
10/4/2019 (Permalink)
October 1st was National Fire Pup Day! This day is set aside to celebrate all the canine firefighters across the country- you know, those adorable Dalmatians that are tantamount with fire houses and fire trucks. These mascots have been associated with firefighters since the 1700s. While men rode on horse-drawn carts to respond to a fire, these brave dogs would run alongside horses and clear the way for safety.
How do you clear the way for safety in your everyday home or work life you may ask? It’s a lot easier job than the Dalmatians had. By being proactive you can provide a safe exit in case of emergency:
- Do not clutter up exit paths- make sure they are always clear. It is against the law to block emergency exits!
- Think of multiple exits strategies in advance based on your location
- Know the locations of fire extinguishers and/or fire alarm stations
- Make sure all smoke detectors are functioning and the batteries are changed at least every six months
- Have a fire evacuation plan
SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast would like to encourage you to prepare for any emergency, especially fire emergencies. Let’s spread the word of fire self-preparedness along with celebrating these adorable, courageous animal icons. Call us at (216) 464-4498 for our services surrounding the Cleveland, Beachwood, and Shaker Heights area.
How to Stay Safe in Beachwood's Summer Heat
6/22/2018 (Permalink)
It’s summer in Cleveland, Ohio – FINALLY! And that means we want to be outside, soaking up the sun as much as possible before we blink and it’s winter again!
With longer days, we can expect hotter temperatures as well, and that can get dangerous if you are not paying close attention. Here are some helpful tips to keep yourself and loved ones safe this summer:
- NEVER leave a child or pet inside a hot car. Even with the windows cracked, temperatures can get well above 120 degrees inside the vehicle when the outdoor temperature is only 75 degrees.
- Drink a LOT of water! You must stay hydrated and avoid drinks with caffeine and alcohol because those can quickly dehydrate you.
- Try wearing light colored and loose-fitting clothing that will allow your skin to “breathe”. Dark colors can absorb sunlight and make you feel much hotter.
- Beware of the hottest part of the day which is typically from 3 pm to 5 pm when the sun’s rays reach the earth the strongest. Try to take frequent breaks from outdoor activities during those times.
- If you must work outdoors, make sure you are not alone. It is always better to have a buddy with you to remind one another to take breaks and hydrate in the shade.
- Check on neighbors, friends, and relatives who live alone and may not have air conditioning. Make sure they are drinking plenty of fluids and staying as cool as possible
- If someone does not have air conditioning in their Newburgh Heights home, encourage them to seek out relief during the hottest part of the day in places like the library, movie theater, mall, etc.
Heat Exhaustion is real and can be dangerous! If someone is showing symptoms of heat exhaustion such as cool, damp, pale or flushed skin, sweating heavily, headache, nausea, dizziness, physical weakness, etc. it is important to move them to a cooler place (your Mayfield Heights home) right away and work on getting them cooler as quickly as possible. Use a fan, remove heavy clothing, apply cool, wet towels to the skin, give small amounts of cool water to drink, and monitor them closely. If the person worsens in any way, call 9-1-1 right away.
Remember – the summer is supposed to be fun in the sun! Keep yourself and everyone around safe by staying aware and knowing the signs of something dangerous. Have a great summer, and call SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast 216-464-4498. We’re here to help!

Is It Illegal To Warm Your Car Up in Cleveland, OH?
1/5/2018 (Permalink)
Though it has been deemed illegal in Ohio to let your car idle (as of 2004), there have come a handful of exceptions from Ohio's Revised Code (2017).
The previous law (as made apparent by Cleveland19) enacted in 2004 states that:
"A law enacted in 2004 to combat car thefts says it is illegal to leave a vehicle unattended while the motor is running. Being caught walking away from your vehicle as the ice melts off your windshield could result in a minor misdemeanor.
The law precludes a clause for private property. Meaning idling your car in your driveway could also be a no-no in the eyes of the law."
However, WCPO9 states in 2017 that:
"According to Ohio's revised code, there are now exceptions to the ordinance. It doesn't apply to cars parked on residential property, a locked car parked anywhere, or emergency and public safety vehicles."
How to Drive in a Flood in Florida...Not Cleveland!
8/27/2017 (Permalink)
There are some serious floods right now in Southwest Florida but floods can happen here in Ohio too. There are some things to keep in mind in case of a flood here in Ohio or if you are traveling in an area that floods!
Here is a great tip from the Center for Disease Control about driving through a flood:
“After a storm, many roads may be flooded. Avoid driving through these areas, especially when the water is moving fast. Drownings can result from driving through water. In fact, as little as six inches of water may cause you to lose control of your vehicle, and as little as two feet of water will carry most cars away.”
SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast at 216-464-4498….here to help! Let our professional team do the cleanup with the proper procedures to keep you, your home or company safe. We extend our services throughout Mayfield Heights, Pepper Pike, East Cleveland, and so many other places!
Storing Food Safely in Your Bratenahl Home
8/11/2017 (Permalink)
Keeping your perishables safe is super important for you and the members of your household. Making sure all the necessary items are refrigerated is best for health and safety. Here's what the Federal Drug Administration has to say about refrigeration of perishables:
“Refrigerate or freeze perishables right away. Foods that require refrigeration should be put in the refrigerator as soon as you get them home. Stick to the "two-hour rule" for leaving items needing refrigeration out at room temperature. Never allow meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, or produce or other foods that require refrigeration to sit at room temperature for more than two hours—one hour if the air temperature is above 90° F. This also applies to items such as leftovers, "doggie bags," and take-out foods. Also, when putting food away, don't crowd the refrigerator or freezer so tightly that air can't circulate.
Keep your appliances at the proper temperatures. Keep the refrigerator temperature at or below 40° F (4° C). The freezer temperature should be 0° F (-18° C). Check temperatures periodically. Appliance thermometers are the best way of knowing these temperatures and are generally inexpensive.
Check storage directions on labels. Many items other than meats, vegetables, and dairy products need to be kept cold. If you've neglected to properly refrigerate something, it's usually best to throw it out.”
Call SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast today at 216.464.4498. We extend our services throughout the Cleveland area including, but not limited to: Mayfield Heights, South Euclid, and Pepper Pike.

Upcoming Hazardous Waste Disposal
7/29/2017 (Permalink)
As we have talked about in our blogs there are certain household items that really should not be discarded in the normal garbage. They pose dangers when put into landfills just as they pose dangers laying around inside your home or garage. Items such as:
"oil or solvent-based paints, sealers, primers, varnishes, polyurethanes, shellacs, spray paints, automotive fluids, kerosene, gasoline, lighter fluid, pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, paint thinners, mineral spirits, turpentine, caustic household cleaners, adhesives, roof tar, driveway sealer, and mercury."
This includes CFL bulbs as we discussed in a recent post! The city of Shaker Heights is accepting these items in a local round up and will safely discard them for you. Bring your items to 15600 Chagrin Blvd on: Sept 16,17,23, or 24 from 8:00am-4:00pm
We highly encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to keep everyone safe!
Let’s talk about LIGHTBULBS
7/20/2017 (Permalink)
You may have heard of or use CFL (compact fluorescent light) bulbs in your home. They can save you money on your electric bill and can also last longer but there are a few specifics you should know about these. What you may not know is that these bulbs contain small amounts of mercury and therefor need to be disposed of properly to protect you and your family as well as the environment.
“CFLs should never be discarded with household trash. The environmental Protection agency recommends that consumers use local recycling options for CFLs. Contact your local government or visit epa.gov/cfl/cflrecycling to identify local recycling options”
“CFLs are made of glass and can break. be careful when removing from packaging and installing or removing from a socket. if a CFL breaks:
- Open a window to allow the room to air out for
5–10 minutes. - People and pets should leave the room.
- turn off forced air heating and/or air conditioning
- collect broken glass and visible powder using stiff
cardboard, tape or a damp paper towel. - Place the debris in a glass jar or a plastic bag in a

Cain Park Concert Series-Cleveland Heights Ohio
7/17/2017 (Permalink)
Come out, enjoy and relax at a concert. SERVPRO of Beachwood, Shaker Heights, Cleveland Heights will try to attend too! Cain Park has a wonderful website located at http://www.cainpark.com/index.aspx?page=11 to check out the concert dates.
The following was copied directly from http://www.cainpark.com/index.aspx?page=699: "Cain Park is a summer performing art park owned and operated by the City of Cleveland Heights.
No ordinary City park, Cain Park begins where most leave off: an outdoor, intimate, covered theater similar to a mid-sized off-Broadway space (Alma Theater); an outdoor covered amphitheater (Evans Amphitheater); an air-conditioned art gallery (Audrey & Harvey Feinberg Art Gallery), and outstanding programming that includes professional theatrical productions, a nationally recognized Arts Festival, cabaret series, professional dance companies, children's programming, and concerts featuring national, regional, and local performers.
In December 2004, Cleveland Magazine included Cain Park as One of 19 Reasons to Cross the River:
"There's nothing quite like Cain Park west of the river. During its summer-long season, you can sit in the airy, intimate Evans Amphitheater or, better yet, recline on your own blanket on the grassy slope that climbs gently upward from the theater while you watch local dance troupes cavort and leap or lose yourself in live concerts of folk, jazz, klezmer, blues, bluegrass, Latin and a little bit of everything else by local and national acts. Cain Park also features 22 acres of bike and jogging paths, tennis and basketball courts, a playground, a skate park and picnic tables and pavilions -- but it's eclectic music under the stars that really makes it unique."
Staying Cool In The Summer Heat
7/15/2017 (Permalink)
“We've all been there—tossing and turning in bed, struggling because our sweat has us practically glued to the sheets. It is awful. There are few things worse than trying to catch some shut-eye (or even just relax!) in an incredibly hot, sticky room. But brutal summer temps are unavoidable for most of us at some point in the year. So how to cool down a room without AC? It's possible, we swear! A few quick tips and trips, a bunch of which you've probably never heard, can mean the difference between a sleepless night in a borderline sauna and some blissful zzzs. So what are we going to cover? (Well, not ourselves, obviously.) Things like how to use the freezer to your advantage (it's not what you think), getting low (to the ground, that is), and getting extra creative with grains. Confused? Just read on. It will all make sense.” For more information, please continue reading at: https://greatist.com/happiness/tricks-to-sleep-in-the-heat

WiFi Enabled Benches Installed In Shaker Heights Park
6/25/2017 (Permalink)
Similar to SERVPRO of Beachwood, the city of Shaker Heights is using advances in technology to better serve the public. “The city has recently installed two brand new, high tech, solar powered, phone charging, park benches in Hildana Park on Chagrin Boulevard, west of Lee Road in the Moreland neighborhood. The new benches, called Soofa, are the product of an MIT spinoff also called Soofa. The benches also provide internet access to citizens.
“Shaker Heights is a progressive community keeping an eye on the demand for today’s technology. Expanding connectivity into a public park seemed like a great place to get the ball rolling,” says Council Member Anne Williams, chair of the neighborhood revitalization committee in a statement.

Beachwood Council discusses program to help seniors, disabled bring garbage containers curbside
6/10/2017 (Permalink)
“City Council President Martin Horwitz said that there is "strong support" among council for a program that would help seniors put their trash containers curbside on collection day, but said that some details need to first be worked out before such a program could be implemented.
Council's Committee-of-the Whole met to discuss the subject June 5 and members had several questions about how the program might work. Those questions included who would be eligible for the service, how much additional manpower would the service department need to carry out the job, and how much would it cost.
The estimated cost of the program discussed at the meeting was $200,000.”

Plants that Could Keep Pests Out Of Your Garden
6/6/2017 (Permalink)
“Rosemary
Rosemary is a hearty plant that can live for years. In a garden, it can help ward off cabbage moths, bean beetles, carrot flies and root knot nematodes. If you're barbecuing in the summer, you can also put some of it on the grill to scare away mosquitoes.
Mint
Mint's strong smell is exceptionally unattractive to a number of critters, including ants, aphids, rodents, cabbage worms and cabbage moths. Best of all, it's a great herb to have around the house, as you can use it in cooking.
Basil
Every home chef can benefit from a fresh supply of basil and so can any garden. This delicious, leafy herb repels aphids, flies, thirps, mosquitoes, tomato worms and mites.”

Weather Terms
4/3/2017 (Permalink)
Spring season has arrived in Northeast Ohio. There are many terms issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) you will here on the radio or TV. News Net 5 posted on their website a guide that defines these terms. We listed a few below, but recommend you click on the link to continue reading more of the information they provided: http://www.newsnet5.com/weather/weather-news/severe-weather-guide-be-storm-ready-with-the-power-of-5-weather-team
“SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH - Severe weather has the potential to occur. You should *watch out* for bad weather to happen. Watches are typically issued before any thunderstorms develop, and are issued for a longer period of time (6-8 hours on average).
While a Watch does not mean bad weather will happen for sure, it means the conditions could rapidly change and the atmosphere is primed for severe weather. This could mean things like hail, straight-line wind gusts and even flooding.
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING - This is your call to action, to do something. Severe weather has been spotted or about to happen and it could impact you. Warnings cover a smaller geographic area and are usually only issued for small chunks of time (on average, 20-30 minutes).”

Stay Safe In Crowded Places Cleveland Ohio
3/31/2017 (Permalink)
With warm weather right around the corner, this is the time of year we are most active. We enjoy going to our favorite amusement parks, baseball games, and concerts. Here are a few things to help keep you and your loved ones safe during these warm months.
- “Be aware of your surroundings. Know where the exits are located and spend just a few seconds mapping out a potential exit route.
- Arrange a meeting place with friends and family. This is a good idea in any crowded place, under any circumstances. People get separated in crowds.
- Review landmarks. Panicked situations can lead to disorientation. Look for a couple of landmarks so that you can remain oriented. Landmarks are also good meeting places."

What Food Is Safe After A Power Outage?
3/13/2017 (Permalink)
Ever wonder about the food in your refrigerator after the storm and the power goes out? What should you keep and what should you throw out? We found this blog on Safeco Insurance’s website: http://www.safeco.com/blog-detail/food-safety-power-outage/1240030252311
This is just a tidbit of the online article. Please click the link above for the entire article.
“When the lights blink back on, don’t just assume everything is OK. A few checks are in order first, especially if the power has been out for more than four hours. What’s not in order? Taste testing. You should never taste food to determine if it’s safe. Instead, follow these tips.
- Meat, poultry and seafood: Discard raw or leftover cooked meat, poultry, fish or seafood that may have been above 40 degrees Fahrenheit for two hours or more. Same goes for thawing meat or poultry, along with tuna, shrimp, chicken or egg salad.
- Dairy: Toss milk, cream, sour cream, yogurt and soy milk that may have been above 40 degrees for two hours or more. Butter and margarine are likely safe to keep.
- Cheese: Discard soft cheeses, such as bleu, Brie, cottage and others, if they may have been above 40 degrees for two hours or more. Hard cheeses and processed cheeses should be safe.
- Sauces and condiments: Mayonnaise, tartar sauce and horseradish should go in the trash if they may have been above 50 degrees for more than eight hours. Toss creamy dressings such as ranch, but vinegar-based dressings may be safe to keep. Items such as peanut butter, jelly, relish, ketchup, barbecue sauce and pickles are typically safe.
- Frozen food: Evaluate frozen (or now partially frozen) items individually. If the food still contains ice crystals, or is has stayed at or below 40 degrees, it should be safe to refreeze.”
Do You Understand Lake Effect Snow?
3/2/2017 (Permalink)
“You don't need a meteorologist to tell you what lake-effect snow is: it's snow that's, um, caused by a lake, right? As it turns out, things are a teensy bit more complicated than that, and if you live in one of the states bordering the Great Lakes that are forever getting clobbered by the stuff — or even if you just marvel at the footage of the latest white-out to hit those luckless places — it can help to know what's actually going on.
Lake-effect snow starts the way so much other winter misery does, with a blast of Arctic air descending on us from the north. Water temperature, even in the Great Lakes in winter, is generally higher than air temperature, since water retains heat longer than air does, and the long, slow warming from the summer months tends to linger. Sometimes the difference in temperature — what's known as the lapse rate — between the onrushing Arctic air and both the water and the thin layer of local air just above it can be as much as 25ºF (14ºC). That gets things churning in a lot of ways.”

Spring Rain in Cleveland Ohio
2/18/2017 (Permalink)
“While spring brings the promise of warm weather and longer days, it also brings a variety of conditions that can include heavy rains, severe weather, and rapid snowmelt that can increase your flood risk. Don’t be caught off guard. Get the facts. Know the risks. Take action to protect yourself, your family, your business, and your finances—before a weather event occurs and it’s too late.
SPRING FLOOD RISKS
Spring Thaw.
Warmer temperatures and resulting snow melt can produce large amounts of runoff in a short period of time, as each cubic foot of compacted snow contains gallons of water. During the early spring, frozen land prevents melting snow or rainfall from seeping into the ground. The water then runs off the surface and flows into lakes, streams, and rivers, causing excess water to spill over their banks. Add seasonal storms to the mix, and the result is often severe spring flooding.
Spring Rains.
Spring storms can bring several inches of precipitation in just hours or can stall out over an area for days. These heavy rains can lead to severe flooding by oversaturating the ground, overfilling storm drains, or causing rivers to spill over their banks or levees.
Flash Flooding.
A flash flood is a rapid flooding of low-lying areas in less than six hours, which is caused by intense rainfall from a thunderstorm or several thunderstorms. Flash floods can also occur when there are drought-like conditions.
Levees and Dams.
The U.S. has thousands of miles of levees and dams that are designed to protect against a certain level of flooding. These structures can erode and weaken over time, and they can also be overtopped—or even fail—during larger flood events.”

Invisible Household Dangers
2/15/2017 (Permalink)
“You may have detected subtle hints that something might by awry: a persistent cough that seems related to the musty smell in your basement, the dastardly scent lingering on your hands after using the kitchen sponge, mysterious-looking paint flakes exposed deep beneath the top layer.
The good news about potential health hazards around the house is that they are easy to uncover, and relatively inexpensive to correct. And the mental benefits of being proactive about these dangers are abundant. No more sleepless nights, and no more wondering whether your child is bathing in water that flowed through lead pipes. These are some of the most common–and easiest to correct–household hazards that may be lingering in your home.
- Kitchen Sponges
The sad truth is that unless you’re diligent about sanitizing them often, kitchen sponges often carry more germs than toilet seats. According to Kenneth Bock’s The Germ Survival Guide, sponges can harbor more than 100,000 bacteria, including food-borne diseases that you’ve wiped off the counter. You should (very regularly) toss them in the dishwasher, replace them, or zap them in the microwave for two minutes.”

Get you home ready for your vacation
2/3/2017 (Permalink)
“Vacations can be an amazing opportunity to relax and unwind but they also require a bit of prep work. After all, you can’t just leave for days of bliss without first getting your home in order. So before you set out on your vacation, make sure your home is ready for the time apart. Here are a few things you should do around your home before going on vacation.
- Leave keys with a trustworthy neighbor. One of the first things you should do when planning a trip is to inform someone of your plans. They don’t necessarily need a full itinerary, but should have a head’s up in case of emergency. A neighbor is a great choice because they cannot only keep an eye on your house, but also collect mail and perform occasional duties.”

Does Insurance Cover Floods?
1/24/2017 (Permalink)
- "According to The Insurance Information Institute “Standard homeowners and renters insurance does not cover flood damage: Flood damage is excluded under standard homeowner’s policies, although it is covered under the comprehensive section of a standard auto insurance policy. Only a flood insurance policy, available to homeowners and renters through the federal government, will cover flood-related losses.
- Flood insurance is easy to purchase: Federal flood insurance policies can be purchased directly from an insurance agent or a company representative, and are available to communities that participate in the National Flood Insurance Program. Nearly 100 insurance companies write and service NFIP policies. In order to find an agent or company servicing your area, visit floodsmart.gov or call (888) 379-9531. Flood insurance is available on a replacement cost basis for the structure of the home and on an actual cash value basis for personal property.”

Keeping Pets Safe in Cold Weather
1/11/2017 (Permalink)
“Indoor pet tips:
During severe weather, dogs should be let out only to relieve themselves. Cats should be kept indoors at all times.
Remove ice, salt and caked mud from your pet's paws and coat immediately.
Before walks, put Vaseline or doggie shoes on your dogs' paws to protect him/her from sidewalk salt and chemicals; wipe the Vaseline off when back inside.
Make sure your pet’s bed is not on the floor in a cold or drafty area of your home.
Indoor dogs typically receive less exercise during cold weather and therefore may require fewer calories; feed smaller portions in order to avoid weight gain.
Indoor exercise playgroups are a great option to keep your pet active on cold days.
Outdoor pet tips:
Minnesota state law governs all companion animals be provided shelter from the elements. In severe weather, allow your pet to be in your house or garage.
Outdoor pets typically need more food in cold weather because they must burn more calories to keep warm.
Check for frostbite, especially on paws and ears.
Make sure your pet’s water is never frozen.
Keep an eye out for and clean up all antifreeze spills—one lick of the sweet-tasting fluid can be fatal to an animal.
Cats have been known to climb onto vehicle engines for warmth; knock on the hood of your car before starting the engine if you suspect your cat could be inside.
Watch for signs of hypothermia—weak pulse, dilated pupils, decreased heart rate, extreme shivering, pale or blue mucous membranes, body temperature below 95 degrees, stupor and unconsciousness. Consequences of extreme hypothermia may include neurological problems including coma, heart problems and kidney failure.”

Snow Shoveling Safety
1/1/2017 (Permalink)
“With really big snow storms – and even everyday, run-of-the-mill snowfalls – comes a risk of death by shoveling. According to CBS News in Chicago, by early February 2015, around 18 people in the Chicago area had died in snow shoveling-related incidents. They ranged in age from their 40s to 75. Nationwide, snow shoveling is responsible for thousands of injuries and as many as 100 deaths each year.
So, why so many deaths? Shoveling snow is just another household chore, right?
Not at all, says Harvard Health Executive Editor Patrick J. Skerrett."
"Picking up a shovel and moving hundreds of pounds of snow, particularly after doing nothing physical for several months, can put a big strain on the heart," Skerrett wrote in February 2013.
Pushing a heavy snow blower also can cause injury. And, there's the cold factor. Cold weather can increase heart rate and blood pressure. It can make blood clot more easily and constrict arteries, which decreases blood supply. This is true even in healthy people. Individuals over the age of 40 or who are relatively inactive should be particularly careful.
National Safety Council recommends the following tips to shovel safely.
Do not shovel after eating or while smoking
Take it slow and stretch out before you begin
Shovel only fresh, powdery snow; it's lighter
Push the snow rather than lifting it
If you do lift it, use a small shovel or only partially fill the shovel
Lift with your legs, not your back
Do not work to the point of exhaustion
Don't pick up that shovel without a doctor's permission if you have a history of heart disease. If you feel tightness in the chest or dizziness, stop immediately. A clear driveway is not worth your life.”

Tips-Saving Money on Energy Costs During The Winter
12/21/2016 (Permalink)
“While setting the thermostat to the right temperatures can improve the comfort of one’s home, it is not the only way to do so. Other ways for a homeowner to minimize energy usage and costs, while improving the overall environment inside of his or her home include:
- Wear warmer clothing and consider setting the temperature to lower than 72 degrees to see more savings on energy bills.
- Inspect and regularly replace filters.
- Get an inspection and furnace tune up before the arrival of winter to get the furnace ready for the season.
- Inspect the home for drafts and leaks. Seal up any cracks, holes or gaps in the home’s entryways, walls, and foundation to prevent thermal energy from escaping.
- Use weather stripping on doors and windows that are used frequently.
- Caulk or seal the windows and any unused exterior doors.
- Set the water tank temperature to 120 degrees to reduce thermal energy costs.
- Open the curtains or blinds to let the sunlight in to help heat the home.
- Rearrange furniture so that no one has to sit where there may be drafts coming in.
- Check all pipes and faucets for leaks. Insulate the pipes by covering them with a blanket.
Prior to the cold weather setting in, homeowners should make every effort to winterize their home. Stop playing with the thermostat and get more enjoyment out of your home by making it as energy efficient as possible.”

Tips For Driving In The Snow
12/14/2016 (Permalink)
- “Accelerate and decelerate slowly. Applying the gas slowly to accelerate is the best method for regaining traction and avoiding skids. Don’t try to get moving in a hurry. And take time to slow down for a stoplight. Remember: It takes longer to slow down on icy roads.
- Drive slowly. Everything takes longer on snow-covered roads. Accelerating, stopping, turning – nothing happens as quickly as on dry pavement. Give yourself time to maneuver by driving slowly.
- The normal dry pavement following distance of three to four seconds should be increased to eight to ten seconds. This increased margin of safety will provide the longer distance needed if you have to stop.
- Know your brakes. If you have anti-lock brakes (ABS) and need to slow down quickly, press hard on the pedal-it’s normal for the pedal to vibrate a bit when the ABS is activated.
- Don’t stop if you can avoid it. There’s a big difference in the amount of inertia it takes to start moving from a full stop versus how much it takes to get moving while still rolling. If you can slow down enough to keep rolling until a traffic light changes, do it.
- Don’t power up hills. Applying extra gas on snow-covered roads just starts your wheels spinning. Try to get a little inertia going before you reach the hill and let that inertia carry you to the top. As you reach the crest of the hill, reduce your speed and proceed downhill as slowly as possible.
- Don’t stop going up a hill. There’s nothing worse than trying to get moving up a hill on an icy road. Get some inertia going on a flat roadway before you take on the hill.
- Stay home. If you really don’t have to go out, don’t. Even if you can drive well in the snow, not everyone else can. Don’t tempt fate: If you don’t have somewhere you have to be, watch the snow from indoors.

Christmas Tree Safety Tips
12/1/2016 (Permalink)
“Although Christmas tree fires are not common, when they do occur, they are more likely to be serious.
Picking the tree
- Choose a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched.
Placing the tree
- Before placing the tree in the stand, cut 2" from the base of the trunk.
- Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source, like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights.
- Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit.
- Add water to the tree stand. Be sure to add water daily.
Lighting the tree
- Use lights that have the label of an independent testing laboratory. Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use.
- Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Read manufacturer's instructions for number of light strands to connect.
- Never use lit candles to decorate the tree.
- Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed.“

Shaker Heights, Ohio- Fire Hydrants vs. Snow
11/13/2016 (Permalink)
The following was found online located at http://shakeronline.com/city-services/collection-and-removal/snow-collection
"During winter months when the snow and ice piles high, Shaker’s 1,500 fire hydrants often are buried.
If you are able, please clear snow from around hydrants and avoid shoveling snow on top of them so that fire crews can quickly gain access during an emergency.
However, if fire hydrants are buried in snow and you are unable to dig them out, don’t worry! The Shaker Heights Fire Department has detailed maps indicating the specific locations of all hydrants. In the event of a fire where a hydrant is not immediately accessible, each truck is equipped with 700 gallons of water – enough to fight a fire for approximately 10 minutes – while crews simultaneously dig out the closest hydrant."

2016-2017 Cleveland Ohio Winter Outlook
10/28/2016 (Permalink)
Scott Sabol from Fox8 News said "Here's the bottom line when it comes to the winter weather outlook for this season: There will be no free ride like last winter when El Nino was the primary driver. This winter we will influenced by a very weak La Nina (opposite of El Nino) along with a host of other drivers which were suppressed last year due to the strong El Nino. Last winter, the polar jet stream was very stable and strong keeping the cold, arctic air locked up north for much of the winter. This winter, indications are that the polar jet stream will be weaker allowing bursts of colder air more frequently.
Last winter, we had ONLY 32 inches of snow. This year: we are forecasting more than double that, about 71 inches of snow. The average snowfall for Cleveland is 66". Here are the seasonal snow averages for all of northern Ohio. We can add 5-10" to these numbers this winter."

Types of Winter Weather
10/24/2016 (Permalink)
“Blizzards are dangerous winter storms that are a combination of blowing snow and wind resulting in very low visibilities. While heavy snowfalls and severe cold often accompany blizzards, they are not required. Sometimes strong winds pick up snow that has already fallen, creating a ground blizzard.
An ice storm is a storm which results in the accumulation of at least .25” of ice on exposed surfaces. They create hazardous driving and walking conditions. Tree branches and powerlines can easily snap under the weight of the ice.
Lake effect storms are not low pressure system storms. As a cold, dry air mass moves over the Great Lakes regions, the air picks up lots of moisture from the Great Lakes. This air, now full of water, dumps the water as snow in areas generally to the south and east of the lakes.”

Doppler Radar Info-Cleveland Ohio
10/14/2016 (Permalink)
“Doppler radar can show the wind direction too, which is helpful when forecasting near mountains and large bodies of water.
If the radar shows wind blowing up the mountain (upslope), forecasters know that automatically, one of the ingredients is in place of the development of precipitation: lift. If the radar shows wind blowing over a large section of a body of water (fetch), then they know that another ingredient is present for the formation of precipitation – moisture.
Radar velocities can help identify the location of cold fronts because there is usually a sharp change in wind direction and will show up as a on Doppler radar.”

Cleveland Ohio Winter 2017 Prediction
10/12/2016 (Permalink)
“This winter will separate the wannabes from the real Clevelanders. Two words describe AccuWeather's winter forecast: Cold and snow. Perfect if you are a real Clevelander.”
"It will be colder than last year, but not extremely cold," said AccuWeather long-range forecaster Paul Pastelok. "And it could be a stormy winter, with fast-moving fronts that begin early and get larger.” Last year you were 4 to 5 degrees above normal [overall]. This year could be 4 to 5 degrees colder than last year."

Tree Safety
10/10/2016 (Permalink)
“Trees are a leading cause of electrical power outages. In fact when trees and power lines touch it creates a very dangerous situation that may even be deadly to anyone in close proximity. - “Temperatures in Cleveland (June-August) were the warmest on recordbeating out 2nd place 1949.
- We only broke 3 record high temperatures. Last year we didn’t break one record. The most ever was in 1988 with 10.
- 53 of the 92 days in Cleveland were at/above 85 degrees, 2nd most ever. It was the most since 1949. Last summer we only had 22.
- 28 of the 92 nights in Cleveland were at/above 70 degrees. That was the 3rd most everand the most since 1931. Last summer we only had 4.
- Rainfall this summer 7.44″ (June-August) was 4th lowest since 1968. Only 2002, 1991 and 1988 lower. Last year we had almost double the rainfall.
- Lastly, only 16 days with high temperatures in the 60s and 70s. Lowest since 1952, 2nd lowest number of “mild” days ever.
- We never went more than 3 straight days in the 70s.
- 35 straight days in the 80s and 90s (July 17 to August 20). Thethird longest stretch of warmth ever and the longest since a 42 day stretch of 80s and 90s in 1955 (June 27 to August 27)
- Only 20 of the 92 days were below average. That hasn’t happened since 1949 when we had 18. Last year we had 42! None of those 20 days were more than 10 degrees under the average. That hasn’t happened since 1953. Last summer we had 10 days that were more than 10 degrees below average”

2017 Winter Weather Prediction
8/26/2016 (Permalink)
2017 Winter Weather Prediction
“In the East, snowfall is expected to be around normal. La Niña could lead to some big East Coast systems during the second half of the season.
"Areas like southern New York state and northeastern Pennsylvania that missed out on snow last year could see higher-than-normal totals this winter," Pastelok said.
Colder-than-normal conditions are predicted to grip the northern Rockies and northern Plains over the late fall and into the winter, with some harsh spells at times.”

Driving In Water After A Disaster
8/22/2016 (Permalink)
This is a great reminder about driving through water after a disaster:
“After a storm, many roads may be flooded. Avoid driving through these areas, especially when the water is moving fast. Drownings can result from driving through water. In fact, as little as six inches of water may cause you to lose control of your vehicle, and as little as two feet of water will carry most cars away.” (Source: http://www.cdc.gov/disasters/psa/driving.html).

Scott Sabols' Preliminary Winter 2016-17
8/17/2016 (Permalink)
"It is looking more likely that a weak La Nina (this post back in early June describes La Nina) will be the driver from the tropics this upcoming winter. Last winter, we had a very strong El Nino.
Take a close look at the snowfall numbers vs the 30 year average for these LA NINA years. I put this graphic together in early June. HINT...HINT!
Again, all of this is HIGHLY PRELIMINARY and will need to be updated in the fall. This is why no specifics are indicated just general thoughts.
Snowfall departures below are snowfall amounts vs the 30 year average in past La Nina winters"

Hot Weather in Cleveland Ohio
8/16/2016 (Permalink)
Here are some tips taken directly from http://www.cdc.gov/disasters/extremeheat/heattips.html to help prevent heat related illness. Please remember this just a few and the website offers many more, so please click on the link provided and read the entire list.
· "Drink more fluids (nonalcoholic), regardless of your activity level. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink. Warning: If your doctor generally limits the amount of fluid you drink or has you on water pills, ask your doctor how much you should drink while the weather is hot.
· Don’t drink liquids that contain alcohol or large amounts of sugar–these actually cause you to lose more body fluid. Also, avoid very cold drinks, because they can cause stomach cramps.
· Stay indoors and, if at all possible, stay in an air-conditioned place. If your home does not have air conditioning, go to the shopping mall or public library–even a few hours spent in air conditioning can help your body stay cooler when you go back into the heat. Call your local health department to see if there are any heat-relief shelters in your area.
· Electric fans may provide comfort, but when the temperature is in the high 90s, fans will not prevent heat-related illness. Taking a cool shower or bath, or moving to an air-conditioned place is a much better way to cool off.
· Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
· NEVER leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle.”

What is a Restoration Company-SERVPRO of Beachwood?
7/29/2016 (Permalink)
According to the IICRC (http://www.iicrc.org/how-restoration-company-handles-water-damage-a-325.html) “Restoration firms that handle water damage typically have a clear set of procedures on hand for any work situation. There is a vast difference between a plumbing leak and a flood, and both bring unique challenges to the job. However, the objective is the same in every instance. The goal is to clean up any debris or trash, remove destroyed materials and dry the property so that it is safe to inhabit again. Efficient cleanup like this requires a variety of skills, most of which can only be learned from other qualified industry experts. Because of this, homeowners should only consider firms that are certified and experienced. “

June is National Safety Month- Summer Safety
6/12/2016 (Permalink)
Summer is a time for vacations, fun, and very hot weather. There are also lots of weather hazards.
The following was copied directly from online to get you started reading the article:
http://www.nws.noaa.gov/com/weatherreadynation/summer_safety.html#.VOdUW_nF9u3
"Being prepared means learning about summer weather and water hazards such as hurricanes, heat, lightning, rip currents, air quality, tsunamis and wildfires. Here’s what you need to know:
- The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. Hurricane hazards come in many forms, including storm surge, heavy rainfall, inland flooding, high winds, tornadoes, and rip currents.
- Since 2003, 43 states within the continental United States have come under a tornado watch; 49 states have come under severe thunderstorm watches; and lightning strikes occur in every state.
- Heat waves are common across the country during the summer. They are dangerous because the human body cannot cool itself properly when exposed to an extreme combination of heat and humidity.
- In 2015, there were 26 lightning fatalities.
- The United States Lifesaving Association estimates that more than 100 people each year die in the surf zone waters of the U.S. and that rip currents cause the majority of those fatalities. Rip currents are just one of many beach hazards.
- Wildfires kill 30 people, destroy 2,800 homes and burn more than 7 million acres, roughly the size of the state of Massachusetts, on average, per year.
- Flash flooding is the number one killer associated with severe weather."

Pepper Pike, Ohio- Communication To Residents
4/27/2016 (Permalink)
The following was copied directly from: http://www.pepperpike.org/about/community-resources/communication-to-residents-during-an-emergency
"The City of Pepper Pike has two communications systems for informing its residents about emergency situations.
- The first system for notification is by programmed mass telephone calling using a pre-recorded tape to convey to residents located in a certain block or area of the city about (for example) a burst street pipe, fallen trees, or a traffic accident requiring traffic to be re-routed. If you are a resident, please be sure to have your contact information securely registered with City Hall so that in case of an emergency, you will be notified.
- The second method for notification is by using the Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) System. The Pepper Pike Community Emergency Radio channel is 1670am. Residents are advised to purchase a battery-operated transistor radio and tune it to 1670am on their radio dial. In case of an emergency, (for example) a weather storm, a power outage, school closings, or a traffic accident, residents can turn on their radios to 1670am and hear instructions from the Police or Fire Department about what to do and how long the situation will exist. The 1670am HAR radio station broadcasts within a 9-mile radius of Pepper Pike. When there are no emergencies to report, the radio station broadcasts community announcements on a continual tape-recorded basis."

Natural Gas and Odors
4/22/2016 (Permalink)
The following was copied directly from: https://www.dom.com/residential/dominion-east-ohio/safety/gas-and-odor
"Natural gas is both odorless and colorless, so Dominion adds an ingredient called mercaptan to it so you can detect its presence. If we did not add mercaptan, it would be hard for you to know that unlit natural gas was coming from your stove after you left the valve turned on. And leaks from furnaces and hot water heaters would be nearly impossible to detect without expensive equipment. So mercaptan's smell is a very valuable safety feature.
But one thing's clear -- mercaptan stinks. In a concentrated form, its smell is almost unbearable. And it takes only a few parts per million of mercaptan for the average person to wrinkle a nose and say, "What is that smell?"
Mercaptans contain sulfur. That's what makes them smell. The kind we use blends well with natural gas and, in a gaseous state, has much the same properties as natural gas, so it will also rise and dissipate with natural gas.
There are other uses for mercaptans in industry, including jet fuel, pharmaceuticals and livestock feed additives. They are used in many chemical plants. Mercaptans are less corrosive and less toxic than similar sulfur compounds found naturally in rotten eggs, onions, garlic, skunks, and of course, bad breath."

"Through its Ready Campaign, the Federal Emergency Management Agency educates and empowers Americans to take some simple steps to prepare for and respond to potential emergencies, including natural disasters and terrorist attacks. Ready asks individuals to do three key things: get an emergency supply kit, make a family emergency plan, and be informed about the different types of emergencies that could occur and their appropriate responses. All Americans should have some basic supplies on hand in order to survive for at least three days if an emergency occurs. Following is a listing of some basic items that every emergency supply kit should include. However, it is important that individuals review this list and consider where they live and the unique needs of their family in order to create an emergency supply kit that will meet these needs. Individuals should also consider having at least two emergency supply kits, one full kit at home and smaller portable kits in their workplace, vehicle or other places they spend time." Shaker Heights Ohio Fire Prevention
4/11/2016 (Permalink)
The City of Shaker Heights has an amazing website with a wealth of information. The following was taken directly from their website and can be found at: http://shakeronline.com/departments/fire-department/fire-prevention
"Smoke Detectors: Install a Photoelectric Smoke Alarm
Photoelectric type detectors are required as the primary alarm for each required location when replacing or adding smoke detectors in all residential dwellings in Shaker Heights. The photoelectric smoke alarm is less prone to nuisance false alarms from cooking and steam. It also responds faster to smoldering type fires that cause the most injuries and deaths in residences.
Power Types
- Uses a 9 volt battery
- Power may last up to 10 years with a long-life battery
- Hardwired to the home 110 volt electrical service (with battery back-up)
- Battery detectors are readily available and can be installed by the homeowner or tenant. Hardwired detectors must be installed by a qualified electrician.
Sensor Types
- There are three types of sensor technology used in smoke detectors: photoelectric, ionization and a combination or dual-sensor that incorporates both sensors in one detector. Photoelectric detectors are required in Shaker Heights.
- Smoke detectors should bear the label of an approved testing agency (UL or FM).
Locations
- Smoke detectors must be placed on every level of the home including the basement, outside every sleeping area. We also recommend that a smoke detector be placed in every bedroom. If you wish, you may use either of the other two types of detectors in conjunction with the photoelectric detector. Detectors should be mounted on the ceiling or high on the wall (smoke rises). Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Additional smoke alarms can be added to increase your protection. There are additional requirements for multi-family dwellings.
Testing and Maintenance
- Test each detector monthly by pushing the button.
- Replace 9 volt batteries in detectors twice a year. (Remember: change your clocks, change your batteries.)
- If the alarm “chirps,” warning that the battery is low, replace the battery right away.
- Replace long-life battery detector at the end of its recommended life, 10 years maximum or sooner if it is not functioning properly.
- Replace all detectors, including hard wired ones, when they are 10 years old or sooner if they are not functioning properly.
- Vacuum out dust or cobwebs that have accumulated in smoke detectors at least once per year.
Additional Tips
- Consider installing interconnected detectors (wired or wireless). When one detector sounds, every detector throughout the house sounds.
- In the event of a false alarm, never remove the battery or disconnect the power source. Simply fan the smoke or steam away from the detector until the alarm stops.
- If a contractor or supplier is installing your detector, make sure you are provided with the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Smoke detectors and batteries are provided free to residents who cannot afford them, and the fire department installs smoke detectors for residents who require assistance. The department also provides guidance on the proper placement of detectors in your home.
Smoke detectors are one component of a complete home escape plan. Have a plan and practice it.
Carbon Monoxide Detectors
- Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless gas produced by fuel-burning appliances. Each year thousands of people become ill due to CO poisoning caused by improperly maintained appliances. CO poisoning may cause irreversible damage to one’s health and requires immediate medical attention.
- To protect your family from CO poisoning, it is recommended that you install at least one detector near the sleeping areas in your home. If your CO detector goes off and you feel ill, you should immediately leave your home and seek emergency help. If you or other family members don’t feel ill, you should open windows and doors to ventilate the home, shut off all fuel-burning appliances and call the Fire Department to investigate the cause of the alarm. Never ignore the alarm!
- Maintenance of a CO detector should be according to manufacturer’s instructions, and should include monthly testing.
- Additional Protection
Professional Systems
The homeowner or apartment tenant must determine the degree of fire protection he or she desires, balanced against the cost of that protection. Presently, the best available is a system installed and monitored by a reliable company operating under a permit issued by the City of Shaker Heights. This type of system will detect a fire and alert the occupants of the house and at the same time notify the Shaker Heights Fire Department or an alarm office maintained by the installing company, which, in turn, will call the Fire Department.
Home Inspections
- The Fire Department offers free home safety inspections by appointment throughout the year. Using a “Home Fire Safety Checklist,” two firefighters inspect dwellings from top to bottom. Among the hazards they look for are faulty or inadequate electrical wiring, improper storage of paints, thinners and other combustible liquids, and unsafe heating and cooking areas.
- The Home Inspection Program, which focuses on preventive measures, provides residents with expertise on how to make their homes fire-safe. Firefighters can also provide information about smoke detectors and home escape plans, as well as hazards in homes and garages.
- To make an appointment for a home inspection, call the Fire Prevention Bureau, 216-491-1215, 8:30 AM to 5 PM weekdays.
Fire Safety
- Fire is the third leading cause of accidental death in the United States. Residential occupancies account for most fire fatalities, and most deaths occur at night during the sleeping hours. Most fire casualties are the victims of smoke and gas inhalation, rather than burns.
- To provide reasonable fire safety for persons in family living units, the Shaker Heights Fire Department recommends a three-point program:
- Minimize fire hazards
- Provide a fire warning system (smoke detectors)
- Have – and practice – a home fire escape plan"

Weather Terms
3/29/2016 (Permalink)
The following was copied directly from: http://www.weathersafety.ohio.gov/SpringSummerWeatherTerms.aspx
"Although thunderstorms occur year round, they are most prevalent across the state during the spring and summer months. Thunderstorms can produce damaging winds, deadly lightning, large hail, flash flooding and tornadoes. In addition, effects of extreme heat can be exasperated by power outages caused by these storms. The following severe weather terms are defined by the National Weather Service.
The National Weather Service (NWS) is responsible for issuing severe weather watches, warnings and advisories to alert the public when dangerous weather conditions are expected.
- Watch - A weather watch means there is the potential or conditions exist for a dangerous weather event.
- Warning - A weather warning means that a dangerous weather event is imminent. Immediate action must be taken to protect life and property.
- Advisory - A weather advisory means weather conditions that are less serious than a warning are imminent. These events may cause a significant inconvenience, and if caution is not exercised, it could lead to a situation that may be threatening to life and property.
Hazardous Weather Outlook - Issued daily, a hazardous weather outlook highlights any significant weather conditions that may develop. It is intended to provide information on the potential of significant weather over the next week.
Special Weather Statement – Provides the public with information concerning ongoing weather hazards, including strong storms that may become severe.
Short Term Forecast - A short-term forecast describes the weather in the local area and includes a short-range forecast (usually not more than six hours). This product will be updated more frequently when it is used during active weather. A short-term forecast is sometimes referred to as a "NOW-cast." "

Flood Insurance Facts
3/25/2016 (Permalink)
The following was taken directly from: http://www.weathersafety.ohio.gov/FloodInsuranceInfo_SprSum.aspx
"Since standard homeowners insurance does not cover flooding, it is important to have protection from the floods associated with heavy rains, rapid snow melt, (residual) hurricanes, and other conditions that impact Ohio and the country.
In 1968, Congress created the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) to help provide a means for property owners to financially protect themselves. The NFIP allows homeowners, renters and business owners to purchase flood insurance through private property and casualty insurance agents. In order to qualify for flood insurance, the home or business must be in a community that has joined the NFIP and has agreed to enforce sound floodplain management standards.
If you are interested in obtaining flood insurance, visit FloodSmart.gov. At this site, you will be able to find a local agent, learn additional flood facts, assess your flood risk, and find information on filing a claim.
Flood Insurance Facts
- Losses caused by flooding are not covered by homeowners or renters insurance. Coverage is available through a separate flood insurance policy, the National Flood Insurance Program, which is administered by the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
- Flood coverage is available for any building located in a community that has qualified for the NFIP. Buildings do not have to be located in a floodplain to be eligible for flood insurance.
- Most Ohio communities qualify for the NFIP. According to FEMA, approximately 280,000 structures are located in Ohio's mapped floodplain areas with a value of $11 billion. About 10 percent of these structures are protected by flood insurance. Click here to view a list of Ohio communities participating in the National Flood Insurance Program.
- As of November 2015, the average flood insurance premium in Ohio is $908 annually, compared to $695, nationally. The average flood insurance premium for states within FEMA Region V is $918. Region V states: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin.
- Licensed property/casualty insurance agents or brokers can sell flood insurance. To request an agent referral, contact: 1-888-379-9531.
- Flood damage to vehicles is covered by auto insurance when comprehensive coverage is purchased."
